Spartans Fall at Georgia Tech

- Roddreka Rogers scored a game-high 19 points as Georgia Tech defeated the USC Upstate women's basketball team 87-46 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon inside McCamish Pavilion.

Georgia Tech improves to 6-3 on the season while USC Upstate falls to 5-4.

Brittany Starling led Upstate with 13 points. Kristen Dickerson scored nine points. A'Lexxus Davis scored a career-high five points.  Starling, Dickerson and Brittany Clency each pulled down four rebounds.

Rogers was one of six Yellow Jackets to finish in double-figures. Aaliyah Whiteside scored 15 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds along with six assists. Irene Gari scored 16 points. Ciani Cryor and Antonia Peresson each scored 12 points. Katarina Vuckovic scored 10 points.

Georgia Tech opened the contest on a 7-0 run before the Spartans pulled to within two, 9-7, following a Raven Jefferson three-pointer with 7:02 remaining. Vuckovic and Dickerson would trade three-pointers as the Spartans hung within a pair, 12-10. After a Starling layup made the score 16-14 in favor of Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-4 run to close out the quarter with a 28-18 lead. Georgia Tech was 11-for-16 (68.8%) from the field in the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets began the second quarter on an 11-0 run, claiming a 39-18 lead before a Davis jumper got the Spartans on the board at the 6:24 mark. Georgia Tech outscored Upstate 20-8 in the quarter and led 48-26 at halftime.

Georgia Tech outscored the Spartans 39-20 in the second half. A Rogers layup at the 6:39 mark gave the hosts a 58-28 lead. Starling sank a free throw to cut the Spartan deficit to 58-29, but Georgia Tech would lead by as many as 35 in the quarter as the Yellow Jackets led 72-37 at the end of the frame. The Yellow Jackets used a pair of Rogers free throws with 3:57 to go for a game-high 84-42 lead. Jefferson made two free throws with 2:09 to play for the final Upstate points.

The Spartans finished the game 16-for-46 (34.8%) from the field. Upstate was 4-for-14 (28.6%) from behind the three-point line and 10-for-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The 46 points scored are a season low for the Spartans. Georgia Tech completed the game 32-for-65 (49.2%) from the field. The Yellow Jackets were 13-for-28 (46.4%) in three point attempts and 10-for-13 (76.9%) at the free throw stripe. Georgia Tech held a 44-23 advantage in rebounds and outscored Upstate 36-18 in the paint.

Upstate returns to action on December 12 against Furman at 2 p.m. in the Hodge Center.
