Jacksonville uses Second Half Surge to Upset Spartans

Spartanburg, S.C. – Marcel White scored 30 points off the bench and Jacksonville snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday following its 89-70 victory over USC Upstate from the Hodge Center.

White finished 10-for-13 from the field and hit four three-pointers as Jacksonville shot 57.4 percent and outscored Upstate 32-18 in points in the paint.

Marcellous Bell added 20 points and J.R. Holder finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Josh Adeyeye and Kori Babineaux scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ty Greene scored 25 points and hit two three-pointers to lead a trio of Spartans in double figures. Greene moved into 10th place on Upstate's all-time single season three-pointer list by making his 71st trey of the season.

Josh Cuthbertson added 16 points and tied a career-high with four three-pointers and Fred Miller chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Cuthbertson gave Upstate its largest lead of the game when his three-pointer at the 13:53 mark of the second half put the Spartans ahead 57-43. That's when Jacksonville answered with a 19-0 run over the next 5:08 to take a 61-57 lead.

Greene cut the deficit to five with a jumper from the free throw line at the 6:28 mark, but Jacksonville went on a 15-3 run thereafter to go up by 17 and put the game out of reach. The Dolphins went 19-for-29 from the field in the second half and shot 65.5 percent.

USC Upstate and Jacksonville went back-and-forth for the first 12 minutes of the first half before the Spartans used a 15-4 run to build a 35-27 lead. A three-pointer by ShunQuez Stephens at the buzzer put the Spartans ahead 42-32 at halftime.

Upstate returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to DeLand, Fla., to face Stetson from the Edmunds Center.
