Fort Myers, Fla. – Brett Comer scored 22 points and had nine assists to lead Florida Gulf Coast to an 86-72 victory over USC Upstate Saturday from Alico Arena.
Bernard Thompson added 19 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range as Florida Gulf Coast made 11 treys and shot 45.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Ty Greene scored a game-high 31 points and made five three-pointers to move into a tie for seventh place on the all-time USC Upstate single season three-pointers made list. It was also Greene's conference-best 15th 20-point game of the season.
Fred Miller scored in double digits with 12 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
Thompson hit three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to open the second half and Florida Gulf Coast turned a 10-point halftime lead into a 53-36 lead just over two minutes into the period.
Florida Gulf Coast would go on to lead by as many as 23 points before a three-pointer from Greene late in the second half cut the deficit to 16.
After Florida Gulf Coast regained a 19-point lead with just over two minutes remaining, a trey from Greene and a layup by Miller trimmed to the lead to 84-70 with 1:21 left. The Eagles, however, would hold on to win for their 10th straight victory.
USC Upstate used five points from Mario Blessing early on to jump out to a 9-2 lead just over three minutes into play. Florida Gulf Coast answered with 12-0 run thereafter to build a 14-9 lead midway through the half.
Greene scored the next 10 points for Upstate to help the Spartans stay within three points with just under nine minutes remaining. Julian DeBose's jumper at the 4:18 mark put Florida Gulf Coast ahead 31-25, but Greene hit his third 3-pointer of the half to cut the deficit to three.
Florida Gulf Coast held Upstate without a field goal for the next 3:39 and opened up a 40-30 lead before ShunQuez Stephens scored at the 1:18 mark to pull Upstate within eight points.
A jumper at the free throw line by Jamail Jones right before half put the Eagles out in front 44-34 at halftime.
Florida Gulf Coast shot 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from three-point range in the first half.
Upstate puts the finishing touches on its regular season home schedule Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Lipscomb to the Hodge Center on Senior Night.
