Strong Pitching Leads ETSU over Upstate

Spartanburg, S.C. – Griffin Krieg pitched six shutout innings and struck out five to lead ETSU to a 9-2 victory over USC Upstate Sunday from Harley Park.

Krieg allowed just two hits and walked only one en route to his first victory of the season. Dillon Cate pitched the final two innings and struck out three to preserve the win.

ETSU scored four runs in the second inning on RBI singles from Robby McCabe, Zach Thompson and Daniel Tucker. The Buccaneers plated their final run of the inning when Thompson came around to score on a fielder's choice later in the inning.

Trey York delivered a one-out triple to left field in the third inning and scored the fifth ETSU run on an RBI groundout from Kevin Phillips.

ETSU tacked on two more runs in both the fifth and seventh inning before Spartan Stephen Dowling connected for a two-run home run with a blast over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh.

James Fowlkes went 2-for-4 for his first multi-hit performance of his Upstate career. Erik Samples and Jake Beaver also finished with one hit for the Spartans.

Upstate starting pitcher Richie Lacell (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up five runs in four innings on the hill. Dylan Parker and Jordan Miller each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Upstate returns to the diamond Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Spartans host Gardner-Webb from Harley Park.
