Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Florida Gulf Coast won doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 to win the point and build a 1-0 early lead. Alex Landert and Johanna Sterkel knocked off Anna Zoske and Sarah Vande Berg 8-1 at No. 3 before Breana Stampfli and Candela Munoz Giron bested Nina Roell and Sharlee Deshmukh 8-1 at No. 2.
Upstate tied the match 1-1 when freshman Nona Ruppert was awarded a victory at No. 2 singles after Stampfli was forced to forfeit the match due to an injury, but Munoz Giron put Florida Gulf Coast ahead 2-1 following her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Roell at No. 4.
Sterkel gave the Eagles a 3-1 advantage after downing Zoske 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, and Landert clinched the match for Florida Gulf Coast with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Vande Berg at No. 6.
Upstate steps out of conference Monday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans host Charlotte from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
