Spartanburg, S.C. – Cam McRae hit two home runs and Presbyterian banged out 16 hits en route to a 16-7 victory over USC Upstate Tuesday from Harley Park.
McRae finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Blue Hose, and third baseman Ryan Hedrick registered four RBIs to go along with two hits and three runs scored.
Upstate shortstop Daniel Fickas collected a team-high three hits and Charlie Carpenter finished with three RBIs.
Presbyterian used a pair of home runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 4-0 advantage. Tyler Weyenberg opened the game with a single to right field and came around to score when Hedrick followed with a home run to left-centerfield. Jay Lizanich doubled to left in the next at-bat and scored two batters later on McRae's first home run of the game.
McRae struck again in the third inning with a two-run home run to centerfield to ignite a six-run inning that put Presbyterian ahead 10-0.
Upstate plated three runs in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk to James Fowlkes, an RBI groundout from Charlie Carpenter and a throwing error by Lizanich.
After Presbyterian pushed across two more runs in the fifth and four in the eighth, Upstate answered with three in the bottom of the eighth and one more in the ninth. Fickas led off the eighth with a single to right and took third two batters later on a double by Fowlkes. Carpenter followed with his third triple of the season and upped his RBI total to a team-high 22 by driving in both runners. Cody Brittain plated Carpenter thereafter with a sacrifice fly for his 12th RBI of the season.
Dowling laced a triple into left field to open the ninth and scored on a two-out single through the left side from Fickas.
Presbyterian reliever Russell Thompson (2-1) earned the win after allowing one hit to go along with one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Upstate starting pitcher Zach Mitchell suffered the loss and fell to 1-2 overall.
The Spartans return to the diamond Wednesday at 6 p.m. when Upstate travels to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop.
