Kennesaw, Ga. – Jordan Hillyer allowed two hits and pitched his first career complete game to lead Kennesaw State to a 5-0 victory over USC Upstate Friday in game one of a three-game series from Stillwell Stadium.

Hillyer (3-2) surrendered a first inning single to Erik Samples and then retired nine straight before hitting James Fowlkes in the fourth inning. It wasn't until Samples led off the ninth with a double to right that Hillyer allowed his second hit.  The right-hander allowed only three runners to reach second base and struck out 11.

Upstate starting pitcher Brian Boocock (3-4) held Kennesaw State scoreless for the first 5.1 innings before Chris McGowan hit a home run over the right field wall. Taylor Allum followed with a single to right field and took second on a wild pitch, and Grant Williams put the Owls ahead 2-0 with an RBI single up the middle to plate Allum. Corey Greeson added a two-run single later in the inning and Chris Erwin accounted for the fifth run with a sacrifice fly.

Jordan Miller pitched the final 2.2 innings for Upstate and limited Kennesaw State to one hit in his second straight scoreless appearance.

Samples extended his hitting streak to eight games and moved into a tie for 20th all-time at USC Upstate with his 28th career double. Shortstop Daniel Fickas stole a career-high two bases and leads the Spartans with five this season.

Upstate and Kennesaw State continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m. with Blake Whitney going up against Travis Bergen.
