Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate starter Lexi Shubert limited North Florida to just three hits to record her fourth shutout of the season and the Spartan bats hit three more home runs as Upstate took a 7-0 victory over the Ospreys Sunday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium. The win gave the Spartans a sweep of the A-Sun series.
Upstate improved to 25-6 overall and 8-1 in the A-Sun with the win. The Spartans return to action Wednesday evening when they host Presbyterian at 6 p.m. at Cyrill Stadium. North Florida fell to 21-18 overall and 3-6 in the league.
Saturday's offensive explosion for Upstate gave way to a good old fashion pitcher's duel between Upstate starter Lexi Shubert and North Florida starter Kaylie Wallace for the first half of the game. Upstate managed to put runners on base in each of the first three innings, including two on in the first and second, but Wallace did not allow the Spartans to capitalize. Shubert faired even better. She allowed just two hits in the first four innings.
Upstate finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth and this week's homer queen Lindsey Greeson provided the punch. Greeson entered the week having never hit a home run in her entire life, let alone her college career. The senior hit her first homer to win the game against NC State in the second game of the doubleheader last Wednesday. She then went yard in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of North Florida. Sunday, she did it again, knocking a solo home run to center in the fourth to break a scoreless tie and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Upstate put the game out of reach with three runs in the fifth. Cheyenne Griffin walked with one out and Kendsey Chappelear was inserted to pinch run. Chappelear stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Osprey catcher. Dana Landers followed with an RBI single through the left side to score Chappelear. One batter later, Kendall Settlemyre lifted a towering two-run home run over the wall in center to give the Spartans a commanding 4-0 lead. The home run chased Wallace from the game with Kayla Goff coming on in relief.
Upstate added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth when Shellie Robinson connected on a two-out solo home run to center to give the Spartans a 5-0 advantage. A day after breaking the school record for home runs in a season and reaching 61 on the year, Upstate cleared the fences three more times Sunday to increase its season total to 64. The Spartans plated two more runs, both unearned, on RBI singles from Karla Beasley and Dana Landers to make it a 7-0 game.
Despite scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, Shubert only needed Greeson's homer in the fourth. She was in command throughout her complete game outing. She allowed just three hits, all to Osprey first baseman Stacy McClelland, and struck out five to improve to 17-4 on the year in what was a strong performance in the circle. Wallace took the loss for North Florida after allowing seven runs on 10 Upstate hits to fall to 7-7 on the year.
Robinson, Landers and Kaitlyn Jaeger each had two hits in the game for Upstate.
