Spartanburg, S.C. – On a day when USC Upstate said thank you to its 10 seniors for their efforts during their time in the program, the Spartan softball team scored five runs in the first two innings and went on for an 8-0 victory over Northern Kentucky to sweep the A-Sun series from the Norse and reach 40 wins for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
A day after clinching its second consecutive A-Sun regular season championship, Upstate recognized its 10 seniors prior to the start of the game. Seniors Lindsey Greeson, Cheyenne Griffin, Kaitlyn Jaeger, Dana Landers, Marche Llanos, Paris Prusak, Hayley Reinfeld, Shellie Robinson, Kendall Settlemyre and Aly Schneider were acknowledged for their hard work, commitment and dedication to the program, athletic department and University.
Sunday's win closed out the regular season for Upstate. The Spartans stand 40-8 overall and 18-2 in the A-Sun, and will take a week off before beginning its quest to win a second A-Sun Tournament championship. The Spartans are the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will open play May 7 after a first round bye. The A-Sun Tournament is being hosted by Florida Gulf Coast May 6-9 in Fort Myers, Fla.
Upstate scored the game's first run when Schneider, on third, and Robinson, on first, executed a double steal and Schneider slid home safe to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Upstate broke open the game with four runs in the second inning to open a 5-0 advantage. Jaeger started things off when she belted a solo home run with two outs. Greeson scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Settlemyre followed with an RBI single and Landers ended the scoring when she walked with the bases loaded.
Upstate starter Lexi Shubert was in control throughout her outing. She exited after four innings to give way to Amanda Strorch. Shubert struck out six and allowed just one hit in her outing to improve to 30-5 on the year. With 30 wins, she ranks second on Upstate's all-time single-season record list behind the 34 wins recorded by Morgan Childers in 2010.
Upstate ended the game with three runs in the eighth inning to take the win by the mercy rule. All three games in the series ended early. Reinfeld drove in a run on an RBI single and Jaeger scored on wild pitch. Robinson ended the game when she drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Reinfeld led the Spartans at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. She stands just three runs away from reaching 100 in her career. Jaeger and Greeson each finished with a pair of hits. Northern Kentucky starter Alyssa Enrique took the loss to fall to 0-9 after allowing five runs on six hits.
