Charlotte, N.C. – USC Upstate freshman Madison Haake capped off her memorable collegiate debut weekend by being named the Most Valuable Player of the Charlotte Invitational and was placed on the All-Tournament Team along with seniors Kayla Eversgerd and Shannon Weiss.
Haake compiled two double-doubles and one triple-double to help lead Upstate to the Charlotte Invitational title and its first 3-0 start since 2006. Overall, Haake compiled 63 assists, 48 digs, 28 kills, seven service aces and five total blocks. She averaged 6.30 assists per set, 4.80 digs per set and 2.80 kills per set.
The Bartelso, Ill. native opened her collegiate career in style Friday evening by becoming the first Spartan in exactly 17 years, and first A-Sun player since 2011, to record a triple-double as Upstate defeated UNC Asheville 3-1. She finished the match with 16 kills, 25 assists and 14 digs. Haake followed by posting double-doubles on Saturday in consecutive 3-0 sweeps of Charlotte and Davidson. She finished the Charlotte match with 22 assists and 15 digs, and followed with 16 assists and 19 digs against Davidson.
Eversgerd led Upstate offensively in the three matches with 38 kills while adding 38 digs. She recorded two double-doubles to increase her career total to 44. The senior began the weekend with 19 kills and 15 digs in the win over UNC Asheville, and added 12 kills and 10 digs in the three-set sweep over Charlotte. Eversgerd also moved into 10th place all-time in digs at Upstate and currently sits at 1,047 for her career. She averaged 3.80 kills and digs per set in the three matches.
Weiss played in two of the three matches this weekend and recorded double-digits digs in both of them. The senior compiled 16 digs apiece in the contests with UNC Asheville and Charlotte. Weiss started the season by setting a new career-high with eight service aces versus UNC Asheville and fell just one shy of tying the overall school record. For the weekend, she finished with 32 digs (4.57 per set) and nine service aces (1.29 per set).
The Spartans open their home schedule Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. when they welcome Winthrop to the Hodge Center. The first 75 USC Upstate students in attendance will receive a free t-shirt.
