Upstate Falls in Overtime Thriller, 75-69, at Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Fla. – Brittany Clency scored a team-high 21 points, and Travonda Haddock added a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds, as the USC Upstate women's basketball team went to overtime against the Jacksonville Dolphins Monday evening before falling 75-69 inside Historic Swisher Gym.

Upstate falls to 18-10 on the season and 9-4 in A-Sun play, while Jacksonville improves to 18-10 overall and 10-3 in the conference.

Clency hit several late three-pointers to send the game into overtime as she finished 6-of-16 from the field, 4-of-7 from three and 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Haddock collected her fourth double-double of the season and tied her career-high with five blocks. A'Lexxus Davis set a new career-high with nine points on 3-of-3 shooting off the bench while Brittany Starling also matched her career-best of four blocks.

Christin Mercer tied Clency with a game-high 21 points and led three JU players in double-figures along with Sherranda Reddick (19) and Jasmyn Brown (11). Kayla Gordon had six rebounds.

The Dolphins opened the game with back-to-back three's by Reddick and Brown as they led 6-2 less than two minutes in. Clency and Starling answered with a pair of jumpers to tie the game 6-6 over three minutes later at the 5:01 mark. Leading 8-6 with 4:09 left in the period, Jacksonville went on a 13-4 run to end the quarter ahead 21-10 after a layup by Mercer with two seconds on the clock.

JU pushed its lead out to 24-11 just 2:30 in the second quarter following a three-pointer from Reddick. The Spartans managed to cut their deficit down to six, 24-18, with 4:25 left on a jumper by Haddock. Neither team would score for nearly three minutes before Reddick's layup with 1:49 remaining made the score 26-18. That sparked a 6-2 run to end the first half as Davis' putback layup with one second left sent Upstate into halftime down 30-20.

The Dolphins took their largest lead of the game less than four minutes into the third quarter when two free throws by Briona Brown gave JU a 38-22 lead at the 6:34 mark. Davis cut it back to a nine-point contest, 38-29, after two free throws only to see Jacksonville go back up 13 when two free throws from Reddick put the score at 42-29. The Spartans scored their final eight points at the charity stripe as they trailed 47-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Upstate stayed within a seven-point margin for a majority of the fourth period until the Dolphins built their lead back to double-digits, 58-47, with four minutes left in the game. Down nine with just over three minutes remaining, Kristen Dickerson knocked down a three to cut the lead down to 59-53 at the 2:58 mark. Clency made it 59-56 the next possession, but Mercer's free throws pushed the score back to 61-56. The Spartans held JU scoreless over the last 2:04 as Haddock and Davis scored five straight points to send the game into overtime. Davis' layup with 32 seconds left evened the score at 61-61.

Upstate took its first lead of the contest, 65-63, just 1:11 in the overtime period after a three by Clency and Haddock's free throw. Clency kept the Spartans in front 68-67 after her fourth triple of the night, but Upstate would be held to just one point over the last 1:56. Jacksonville outscored the Spartans 8-1 the rest of the way for the 75-69 victory.

Upstate finished the game shooting 35.4% (23-of-65) from the field while the Dolphins were 38.2% (21-of-55) as a team. The Spartans outrebounded JU 42-41 and held a 21-12 advantage in second chance points.

Upstate concludes its regular season Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against NJIT on Senior Day.
