Spartans Use Strong Pitching to Defeat Gardner-Webb

– The USC Upstate pitching staff limited the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to four hits as the Spartans claimed a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night at John Henry Moss Stadium/Bill Masters Field.

Upstate improves to 13-12 and has won a season-high five consecutive games while Gardner-Webb drops to 21-7.

The Spartans got on the board in the third inning as James Fowlkes reached on a base hit with one out and scored on a two out base hit by Charlie Carpenter. In the Upstate fourth, Jake Beaver reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored on a Devon Ortiz double. Cody Brittain was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth and scored on a Jordan Ford single with one out.

Jacob Walker led off the Gardner-Webb eighth with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. Brittain got out of the inning unscathed thanks to a pair of strikeouts. Collin Thacker reached on a double with one out in the ninth before a fly out and foul out ended the game.

Ortiz went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single and an RBI. Fowlkes finished 3-for-5 with three singles and a run scored. Beaver went 2-for-4 with a single, double and run scored. Ford and Carpenter were each 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI.

Walker and Thacker each doubled for the Runnin' Bulldogs while Taylor Fisher and Danny Sullivan reached on singles.

Carpenter (1-1) earned the win as he allowed one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in two innings. Richie Lacell recorded his fifth save of the season. Andrew Massey (3-2) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

Upstate opens Atlantic Sun conference play on Friday at NJIT. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
