Xavier Takes Series Opener over Upstate

– The USC Upstate baseball team dropped a 6-1 non-conference matchup to Xavier on Friday afternoon at Harley Park in the first game of a three-game series.

Xavier improves to 1-7 while Upstate falls to 7-3.

Jake Beaver went 2-for-4 with two singles to lead the Spartans. Zach Krider went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Daniel Fickas went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Charlie Carpenter and Cody Brittain each had a single.

David Morton went 3-for-4 to lead the Musketeer offense. Joe Gellenbeck went 2-for-5 with a single, home run, run scored and two RBI.  

Gellenbeck led off the second inning with a home run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Andre Jernigan was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth inning, stole second, and scored on a Nate Soria base hit.

Xavier plated a run in the sixth inning on a Morton single. Upstate got on the board in the bottom-half of the inning as Fickas reached on a double with one out and scored on a Krider double. The Musketeers scored three runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of two Upstate errors.

Zac Lowther (1-1) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings. Blake Whitney (0-2) took the loss after he allowed two runs on six hits in five innings.

The series continues Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
