Spartanburg, S.C. – Rylan Bannon's single with two outs in the ninth inning broke a 7-7 tie as the Xavier Musketeers defeated USC Upstate 8-7 at Harley Park on Sunday.
Xavier improves to 3-7 with the weekend sweep while Upstate drops to 7-5.
J.J. Shimko went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, run scored and two RBI. James Fowlkes went 2-for-4 with two singles. Zach Krider was 1-for-4 with a double, sacrifice fly and two RBI. Jaden Savage was 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI. Charlie Carpenter was 1-for-3 with a single and RBI. Jake Beaver, Daniel Fickas and Jordan Ford each had a single.
The Musketeers got on the board in the second inning as Nate Soria led off with a double and scored on a David Morton single. Upstate tied the game in the home half of the inning. Carpenter began the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Savage base hit.
Xavier plated four runs in the third on five hits and scored two runs in the fourth thanks to a pair of singles.
Upstate scored three runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Xavier error, a Shimko base hit and a Krider sacrifice fly. Beaver led off the Spartan seventh with a walk followed by a Fowlkes single. Beaver would advance to third using aggressive baserunning on a foulout and scored on a Shimko single. Krider followed with a double to score Fowlkes before a Carpenter base hit just over the Xavier shortstop brought home Shimko to tie the game at 7. Xavier got out of the inning thanks to a double play.
Ford led off the eighth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but a flyout and strikeout ended the inning.
Joe Gellenbeck led off the ninth with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Richie Lacell struck out Soria before an intentional walk loaded the bases. Bannon, who entered the game in the seventh inning as a defensive replacement, singled to bring home Gellenbeck as the winning run. Upstate was retired in order in the ninth.
Brad Krischner (1-1) earned the win after allowing a hit with a walk and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Lacell dropped to 0-2 after allowing one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in an inning. Garrett Schilling picked up his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Upstate hits the road for a pair of games in Charleston, traveling to The Citadel on Tuesday before facing Charleston Southern on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
