Runs Come in Bunches for Spartans in Victory over Charleston Southern

– The USC Upstate baseball team had three multi-run innings as the Spartans defeated Charleston Southern 11-6 at Harley Park on Wednesday evening.

Upstate improves to 18-20 overall while Charleston Southern drops to 15-23.

Upstate opened the game with a four-run first inning. J.J. Shimko reached on a leadoff single before advancing to second and third base on wild pitches. Following a walk to Daniel Fickas, James Fowlkes brought home Shimko with a single to get Upstate on the board. Cody Brittain followed Fowlkes with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Charleston Southern cut the Upstate lead in half thanks to a Brandon Gragilla two-run home run with one out in the fourth inning. The Spartans responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Fickas brought home two runs on a triple and scored on an errant pickoff attempt. Charlie Carpenter and Anthony Vaglica each brought home a run on a base hit.

Brittain led off the Upstate sixth inning with a single and scored on a Carpenter double to right field. Brendan Brundage brought Carpenter home on a two-out single for an 11-2 Upstate lead.

The Buccaneers scored four runs in the seventh inning. Ryan Maksim drove in two runs with a single while Mason McClellan and Mike Sconzo each had an RBI single.

Carpenter went 4-for-5 with three singles, a double, run scored and two RBI. Brittain went 3-for-5 with two singles, a home run and three RBI. Fickas went 2-for-4 with two triples, matching a school individual game record held by several players. Shimko finished 2-for-3 with two singles and two runs scored.

Maksim finished 3-for-5 with three singles and two RBI. Gragilla went 1-for-3 with a home run, run scored and two RBI.

Brttain improved to 2-0 after allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Kyle Dyson (1-2) took the loss after surrendering eight runs (six earned) on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

Upstate returns to Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend, traveling to Stetson for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
