Spartans Defeat UNC Asheville to Complete Season Sweep

– The USC Upstate Spartans completed the season sweep of UNC Asheville with a 9-3 victory at Harley Park on Tuesday night. Upstate defeated the Bulldogs by an identical score last Tuesday at Greenwood Field 

USC Upstate improves to 14-14 while UNC Asheville drops to 7-22. 

In the UNC Asheville first, Dan Guy reached on a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Danny Wilson single. The Bulldogs had the bases loaded with two outs but Upstate starting pitcher Blake Whitney got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

Charlie Carpenter led off the Upstate second with a walk and stole second before advancing to third on a flyout. Cody Brittain brought Carpenter home with a double down the right field line before scoring on a Daniel Fickas single. The Spartans added a run on a hit batter before scoring their final run of the inning on a Jordan Ford single. 

Upstate added three runs in the fourth inning. Anthony Vaglica led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Fickas. UNC Asheville pitcher Brett Hyers fielded a bunt by Devon Ortiz and threw to third in an attempt to retire Vaglica, but his throw was wild which allowed two runs to score and Ortiz to advance to third. James Fowlkes brought Ortiz home on a double but was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the inning. 

Carpenter led off the fifth with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brittain single. Brittain would score on a UNC Asheville error. 

The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth inning on a Scott Kobos single and a run in the seventh inning on a Kyle Carruthers single. 

Vaglica went 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored. Brittain went 2-for-4 with a single, double, two runs scored and two RBI. Fickas finished 2-for-4 with two singles, two runs scored and an RBI. Carpenter was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Fowlkes and J.J. Shimko each went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ford went 1-for-4 with a single and RBI while extending his hitting streak to a team-best 12 games.

Carmine Pagano went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored to lead UNC Asheville. Carruthers went 2-for-5 with two singles and an RBI.  The Bulldogs left 11 runners on base. 

Zach Mitchell (5-2) earned the win as he allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts in four innings of relief. Whitney allowed one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in three innings. Lucas Clarke (0-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings. 

Upstate returns to action tomorrow, facing Presbyterian College at 6 p.m. from Harley Park.
