Lynchburg, Va. – The USC Upstate volleyball team closed out play at the Liberty Invitational on Saturday by splitting a pair of matches highlighted by winning its first match of the season inside the Vines Center. The Spartans began the day by falling 3-1 to the ETSU Buccaneers before defeating the Hampton Pirates 3-0.
Upstate exits the weekend with an overall record of 1-6. ETSU improved to 5-0 while Hampton dropped to 0-5 on the season.
The Buccaneers defeated the Spartans by scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-15. Upstate responded by defeating the Pirates 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23.
LIBERTY INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
- Madison Haake was selected as the Spartans representative on the Liberty Invitational All-Tournament Team.
- Haake concluded the weekend with two double-doubles, and compiled 81 assists (8.10 average) and 34 digs (3.40 average).
- It is the third All-Tournament Team honor for Haake in her career after being named last year to the All-Tournament Team at the Charlotte Invitational and AmericInn Runnin' Bulldog Classic.
STATS OF THE MATCH – ETSU
- Upstate had two players finish with double-doubles in Haake and Callie Yeargin. Haake tallied her fourth double-double of the season, and 15th of career, after finishing with 29 assists and 16 digs. Yeargin recorded her first double-double of the year, and the fourth in her career, as she led the team with 14 kills and added 11 digs.
- Kaleigh Kelley contributed 13 digs in the match.
- ETSU had four players compile double-digit kills led by Briana Allmon with a match-high 18. Allmon finished with a double-double after adding 16 digs.
- Rylee Milhorn also had a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs, and Kristen Favre dished out 58 assists. Hailey Aguilar posted a match-high 18 digs.
- The Buccaneers out-hit the Spartans .285 to .163.
ETSU STORYLINE
- The teams split the opening 20 points of the first set before ETSU scored five of the next six points to lead 15-11. Upstate responded with a 10-5 run to go ahead 21-20 late. After the Buccaneers tied it at 21-21, the Spartans scored the final four points to win 25-21 on Yeargin's service ace.
- ETSU held an early 10-7 lead in the second set before Upstate tied the score at 13-13 courtesy of a 6-3 run. The Spartans stayed within two points after that until another service ace by Yeargin made it 19-19. Tied at 20-20 following a kill by Montana Swanson, the Buccaneers ended the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-22.
- The first 30 points of the third set featured 12 ties and saw Upstate lead seven times with the last coming at 15-14 on a combination block by Swanson and Emily Koelling. The teams were tied four more times after that with an ETSU service error evening the score at 19-19. The Buccaneers scored the last six points to win the frame 25-19.
- ETSU opened the fourth set on a 7-3 run before the Spartans rallied to within two, 9-7, on a service ace by Alexa Lagaly. The Buccaneers broke the set open by going on a 6-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. Upstate would only get as close as five, 16-11, after that. ETSU went on to win the set 25-15, taking the match 3-1.
STATS OF THE MATCH – HAMPTON
- Swanson recorded her second career double-double after compiling a new career-high of 13 kills while adding 12 digs.
- Haake joined Swanson by setting a new career-high of 37 assists while Kelley had 17 digs.
- Reeana Richardson had a team-leading 14 kills for Hampton and Brianna Lilly added 29 assists.
- The Spartans out-hit the Pirates .250 to .174, and held a 51-40 advantage in digs.
HAMPTON STORYLINE
- Upstate picked up five of the first seven points to lead 5-2 early in the first set, but Hampton rallied to tie the frame at 11-11 after a 9-6 run. The Spartans would stretch their lead to 18-14 following a kill from Yeargin. The Pirates got to within one at 21-20, only to see Upstate score the last four points to win 25-20 on a service ace by Brianna Tellschow.
- After splitting the initial 12 points of the second set, the Spartans took a 12-10 lead off a Hampton service error. The Pirates would take a 15-14 lead on a combination block, but Upstate followed with seven consecutive points to give it a 21-15 advantage on Tellschow's kill. Swanson reached her double-double after giving the Spartans the 25-21 triumph with a kill.
- Upstate held an early 11-7 lead to start the third set before Hampton answered back with four straight points to tie the score at 11-11. The Spartans would later go back up by four only to see the Pirates even the set again at 19-19 on a service error. Upstate used a 5-1 run to take a 24-20 lead. Hampton made a late rally, but Swanson secured the 25-23 victory with a kill to give the Spartans their first win of the season.
