Spartanburg, S.C. – Brittney Delva scored a career-high 17 points but the USC Upstate women's basketball team was unable to overcome a 15-0 Jacksonville run to close the third quarter in a 65-47 loss Saturday at the Hodge Center.
Jacksonville improves to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the ASUN while Upstate drops to 8-9 and 1-1.
Delva scored a career-high 17 points with her previous career-high being 14 points. Raven Jefferson finished in double figures for the 12th game this season with 16 points. Coco Ritter grabbed a career-best eight rebounds.
Brandi Buie led Jacksonville with a game-high 23 points followed by Sherranda Reddick with 20. Christin Mercer added 13 points. Kimberly Dawkins pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Game Breakdown
- Buie opened the scoring with a 3-pointer 13 seconds into the game before the Spartans got on the board with a Riley Popplewell layup. Following a Jefferson layup that made the score 6-4 in favor of the Dolphins, Jacksonville went on a 7-0 run capped by a Buie layup for a 13-4 lead at the 7:09 mark. Jacksonville led 25-13 after the first quarter.
- After a Reddick 3-pointer gave Jacksonville a 30-15 lead, Upstate went on a 13-0 run to close the second quarter as a pair of Delva free throws closed out the half. Jacksonville led 30-28 at intermission despite not scoring in the final 7:54 of the period.
- Upstate opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run and took its first lead of the game, 32-30, on a Jefferson basket with 8:44 to play. Jacksonville would tie the game at 37 on a Buie layup. Delva gave the Spartans a 38-37 lead with just over five minutes remaining after making the front end of two free throws before the Dolphins went on a 15-0 run to close the quarter with a 52-38 lead.
- A Ritter free throw followed by a Jefferson 3-pointer with 3:55 remaining in the fourth quarter cut the Spartan deficit to 10, 57-47. The Spartans would get no closer as Jacksonville scored the final eight points of the game.
By the Numbers
- Jacksonville did not score from the 7:54 mark of the second quarter until the 7:40 mark of the 3rd quarter.
- Upstate's bench outscored the Jacksonville reserves 9-4.
- The Spartans committed a season-high 22 turnovers which resulted in 31 Jacksonville points. Upstate forced Jacksonville to turn the ball over 27 times and scored 17 points off of turnovers.
- Jacksonville finished 23-for-50 (46.0 percent) from the field while Upstate was 16-for-55 (29.1 percent).
