Upstate Sweeps North Florida 3-0

Spartanburg, S.C. – Madison Haake, Montana Swanson and Rebecca Shearer each recorded double-doubles on Sunday afternoon as the USC Upstate volleyball team earned its second conference victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of the North Florida Ospreys from the G.B. Hodge Center.

Upstate improves to 5-11 on the season and 2-1 in ASUN play while North Florida falls to 7-11 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Spartans won the match by scores of 30-28, 26-24, 25-17.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • Upstate hit a season-high .281 in the match and outhit the Ospreys who finished with a .157 hitting percentage.
  • The Spartans also led 49-39 in kills, 42-35 in assists, 51-48 in digs and 8.0 to 6.0 in team blocks.
  • Haake compiled her seventh double-double of the season on 26 assists and 14 digs while Swanson netted her first with 10 kills and 10 digs. Shearer also compiled her first double-double of the year on 12 assists and 11 digs.
  • Callie Yeargin led all players with a match-high 13 kills and Lily Dempsey posted 10.
  • Carina Hoff led the Ospreys offensively with 10 kills and Carinne Turner and Madilyn McCarty combined for 25 assists. Ashley Laborde had a match-high 18 digs.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

  • Set One:  The first set featured a total of nine ties. The teams traded the first 10 points of the match before Upstate scored five of the next six to lead 10-6 on a kill by Gloria Ikenegbu. The Spartans extended their lead to 17-12 midway following back-to-back kills from Swanson and maintained their lead at 22-18 late with Haake's service ace. North Florida answered with six straight points and sat at set point leading 24-22. Upstate came back with the next two points and began a series where the score would be tied five times with the last coming at 28-28. A kill by Yeargin and a UNF attack error gave the Spartans the 30-28 win.
  • Set Two:  North Florida began the second set on a 5-0 run and later held an 8-3 lead after an Upstate attack error. The Spartans rallied back courtesy of a 7-2 run and trailed 11-10 after a combination block from Haake and Brianna Tellschow. The Ospreys increased their lead back to 14-10 and later forced Upstate into a timeout leading 20-17. With UNF sitting on set point leading 24-22, the Spartans came back to tie the score at 24-24 with a kill and service ace by Yeargin. Swanson and Dempsey finished off the set for Upstate with kills and gave it the 26-24 triumph.
  • Set Three:  The Spartans raced out to an early 10-3 lead to open the third set and carried that momentum through the middle stages of the frame. Upstate went ahead by ten points, 14-4, on Dempsey's kill. The Spartans held their largest lead of the set at 22-8 on a kill by Yeargin. North Florida would get as close as seven points late, 24-17, but Dempsey secured the set and match for Upstate the following play.

  • The Spartans begin a five-match road trip next weekend, Oct. 6-7, at Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
