Spartans Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Loss at Gardner-Webb

Boiling Springs, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team lost to Gardner-Webb 60-39 in an Education Day contest on Tuesday at Paul Porter Arena.

Gardner-Webb improves to 5-2 while Upstate falls to 1-6.

A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS

  • Alexus Hill scored a game-high 14 points to lead Gardner-Webb.
  • Tierra Huntsman posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Celia Tibbs scored 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.
  • Riley Popplewell led Upstate with eight points.
  • Gardner-Webb outrebounded Upstate 57-30.
  • Brittney Delva had a team-best three steals.
  • The Upstate bench outscored the Gardner-Webb reserves 17-13.
  • Gardner-Webb finished 25-for-64 (39.1 percent) from the field while Upstate was 12-for-50 (24 percent).

FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Gardner-Webb opened the game on a 9-2 run.
  • Following an Anda Kuzmina 3-pointer at the 7:06 mark, the Runnin' Bulldogs went on a 16-0 run to lead 25-5 at the end of the frame.
  • Kuzmina scored all five of Upstate's first quarter points.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs were 10-for-15 from the field in the frame.

SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • Huntsman gave the hosts their largest lead of the half at 23 points, 28-5, after she made the second of two free throws at the 8:15 mark.
  • A Brittney Delva steal and layup followed by a Popplewell jumper prompted a Gardner-Webb timeout with 7:06 to play in the frame as the Runnin' Bulldogs led 28-9.
  • Following a Tibbs free throw that gave Gardner-Webb a 29-10 lead with 5:04 left, Upstate went on an 8-0 run to pull within 11, 29-18, with 2:35 to play.
  • 3-pointers by Rylie Parkhurst and Camilla Kilinc brought the Spartans within seven, 31-24, with 44 seconds left.
  • Carley Plentovich's layup gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 33-24 lead heading into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • After Tamera Thorpe and Hill traded baskets in the first 38 seconds of the quarter, neither team scored until a Ky'Asia Stanford layup with 6:14 to play.
  • Following a Popplewell free throw to bring Upstate within 10, 37-27, Gardner-Webb went on a 7-0 run for a 44-27 advantage with just under four minutes remaining.
  • Gardner-Webb led 49-32 at the end of the period.

FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN

  • The Spartans went scoreless for the first four minutes of the frame until a Morgan Williams layup brought the Spartans within 19, 53-34, at the six minute mark.
  • A Carley Plentovich jumper followed by a Morgan Pointer layup gave Gardner-Webb a 25-point lead, 60-35, with 3:10 remaining.
  • Latasha Johnson scored her first collegiate basket on a layup with 2:26 to play. Johnson's layup with 30 seconds left was the final basket of the game.
