Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team honored its four seniors on Friday evening by recording a 3-0 sweep in ASUN play over the Stetson Hatters inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
Following the match, Upstate recognized its four seniors in Kaleigh Kelley, Dominique Arnold, Rebecca Shearer and Brianna Tellschow.
The Spartans won the match by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 34-32.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Upstate held a .232 to .196 advantage over Stetson in hitting percentage.
- The Spartans led 56-46 in kills and 51-42 in digs.
- Montana Swanson led the Upstate offense with her fourth double-double this season on a match-high 17 kills and 13 digs.
- Madison Haake contributed her 10th double-double of the year with 43 assists and 15 digs.
- Lily Dempsey came off the bench to record 14 kills.
- Kaleigh Kelley posted 19 digs to lead the Spartans defensively and now sits 19 away from becoming the program's all-time Division I career leader.
- Anna Bezhan and Naina Ivanova each tallied double-doubles for the Hatters.
- Charlotte Earnhardt had a team-high 15 kills while Chelcie Spence led all players with 21 digs.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One: The opening set featured seven ties and three lead changes as Stetson scored eight of the first 12 points to lead 8-4. Upstate came back to tie the score three times midway with the last coming at 13-13 on Dempsey's kill. The Hatters went back in front by three, 17-14, before the Spartans used a 6-0 run to go in front 20-17 capped by a combination block from Swanson and Tellschow. Stetson then went on a 7-2 run and sat at set point leading 24-22. Upstate scored the last four points to win 26-24 on a kill from Tellschow.
- Set Two: The Hatters started the second set on a 6-2 run before the Spartans responded with a 9-2 run of their own to lead 11-8 on Kelley's service ace. After Stetson cut the lead down to 13-11, Upstate broke the set open courtesy of another 9-2 run to go in front 22-13 after a kill by Swanson. Tellschow won the set for the Spartans several plays later as her kill put the final score at 25-17.
- Set Three: The third, and final, set was the longest this season for Upstate as it featured 66 total points, 16 ties and five lead changes. The teams traded the first 14 points and were tied 7-7 following Swanson's kill. The Spartans then proceeded to go on an 11-5 run to hold an 18-12 advantage that concluded on a kill by Dempsey. The Hatters rallied back to tie the score at 22-22 late and began a stretch were the score would be even ten more times. The teams exchanged the next 20 points before Dempsey and McKenna Kirkpatrick combined for a block to give Upstate a 33-32 lead. Dempsey won the set, and match, for the Spartans the following play with her kill.
