Spartanburg, S.C. – Reigning ASUN Conference Freshman of the Week Anda Kuzmina scored a career-high 17 points but a fourth quarter comeback by the USC Upstate women's basketball team fell short in a 76-70 loss to UNC Asheville at the Hodge Center on Saturday afternoon.
UNC Asheville is 2-7 after the win while Upstate drops to 3-9.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
- Kuzmina surpassed her previous career high of 14 points.
- Tamera Thorpe scored 14 points off of the bench.
- Morgan Williams and Brittney Delva finished in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.
- Williams, Delva, Thorpe and A'Lexxus Davis each had six rebounds.
- Jessica Wall scored a game-high 22 points to lead UNC Asheville.
- Bronaza Fitzgerald added 15 points followed by Brooke Jordan-Brown with 13.
- Delva and UNC Asheville's Khaila Webb each had six assists.
- UNC Asheville outrebounded Upstate 34-31.
- The Spartans finished the game 28-for-58 (48.3 percent) from the field. The Bulldogs were 30-for-61 (49.2 percent) from the field.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Consecutive layups by Davis and Delva gave Upstate a 4-0 lead at the 8:41 mark.
- Kuzmina's 3-pointer gave the Spartans a 10-6 edge with 6:24 remaining.
- The Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run for a 16-12 lead following a Wall free throw with just over four minutes left.
- Wall's 3-pointer at the 1:48 mark gave the visitors a 21-14 lead.
- Upstate trailed 22-20 at the end of the frame following a Delva 3-pointer with 13 seconds left.
- Wall scored 13 points in the first quarter and was 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point line.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Williams evened the contest at 22 on a jumper at the 9:11 mark.
- Zip Scott's 3-pointer gave the visitors a 31-27 edge with 5:30 remaining.
- Following a Davis layup with just under two minutes left, the Bulldogs used a Wall 3-pointer and a Jordan-Brown layup to take a 40-33 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Delva's jumper at the 7:26 mark brought Upstate within three points, 46-43.
- Scott gave the Bulldogs a 52-45 lead with just over five minutes left.
- Upstate answered with an 8-0 run as a pair of Thorpe free throws tied the game at 52 with 2:18 to play.
- UNC Asheville led 58-54 at the end of the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Jordan-Brown completed the three-point play with 6:10 left to give the Bulldogs a 65-58 advantage.
- Thorpe's layup at the 4:31 mark brought Upstate within five points, 67-62.
- UNC Asheville went on a 9-3 run as the first of two Amaryah Corpening free throws gave the Bulldogs a 76-65 lead with 1:52 left.
- Kuzmina's jumper with seven seconds remaining was the final basket of the game.
