Charleston, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the College of Charleston Cougars on Friday evening in its opening match of the season during day one of the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic at TD Arena.
The Spartans fall to 0-1 on the season while College of Charleston improves to 1-0 overall.
The Cougars won the match by scores of 9-25, 20-25 and 12-25.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Madison Haake finished the match with her first double-double of the season on 17 assists and 12 digs to lead Upstate.
- Offensively, Rebecca Shearer collected a team-high six kills.
- Kaleigh Kelley had a team-leading 17 digs while Montana Swanson collected 11.
- Devon Rachel and Lauren Freed each had double-doubles for College of Charleston.
- Allison Beckman added 33 assists and McKala Rhodes contributed 19 digs.
- The Cougars held a .236 to .015 advantage over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One: Upstate scored the set's first two points on an error and kill by McKenna Kirkpatrick to lead 2-0. College of Charleston answered back to lead 8-4 after going on an 8-2 run. The Cougars broke the set open with a 10-0 run and led 19-5. College of Charleston scored the final four points to win 25-9.
- Set Two: The Spartans held an early 8-5 lead to start the second set when Brianna Tellschow connected on a kill. After the Cougars cut the lead to 11-10 midway, Upstate answered with four straight points, including two on kills by Shearer, to go ahead 14-10. College of Charleston came back several times to even the score with the last coming at 18-18 before taking the lead. The Spartans cut their deficit to 21-20, but the Cougars captured the last four points for the 25-20 triumph.
- Set Three: College of Charleston began the third set on a 6-1 run lead to lead Upstate by five. The Cougars took a 17-6 lead midway through the set after registering four consecutive points. Upstate got as close as 21-12 late when Lily Dempsey and Gloria Ikenegbu teamed up for a combination block. College of Charleston won the set by a score of 25-12 to take the match 3-0.
