Tennessee Downs Upstate in Four Sets

Knoxville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate volleyball team began the final day of the Rocky Top Invitational dropping a 3-1 non-conference decision to the host Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday morning at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Upstate falls to 3-9 on the season while Tennessee improves to 6-2 overall.

The Volunteers won the match by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-16.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • Tennessee finished the match holding a .333 to .186 advantage in hitting percentage.
  • Gloria Ikenegbu posted double-digit kills for the second time this season after leading the Spartans offensively with ten kills, falling two shy of tying her career-high of 12 against Tennessee State this season.
  • Emily Russell concluded with a season-high seven kills while Lily Dempsey contributed nine.
  • Madison Haake added her sixth double-double of the season on 32 assists and 11 digs.
  • Kaleigh Kelley tied for a match-high with 19 digs alongside the Volunteers' Brooke Schumacher.
  • Alyssa Andrena led the Tennessee offense with 13 kills.
  • Sedona Hansen collected a double-double and combined for 57 assists with Callie Williams.

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN

  • Set One:  The teams traded the opening eight points of the first set and were tied 4-4 after a Volunteer attack error. Upstate stayed within a three-point margin at 12-9 on a kill from Ikenegbu. Tennessee broke the set open with a 7-2 run to lead 19-11. The Volunteers scored the final six points to win 25-12.
  • Set Two:  Tennessee scored 11 of the first 14 points to start the second set and held an 11-3 lead. The Spartans answered back with four straight points to cut their deficit to 11-7 following back-to-back kills by Montana Swanson, who finished with eight kills and nine digs. The Volunteers would go on a 10-5 run and increase their advantage to 21-12. Upstate would get as close as seven points late but Tennessee went on to win the set 25-17.
  • Set Three:  The Spartans came back to win the third set 26-24 and cut the Volunteers lead to 2-1. The first 20 points of the frame were split evenly and Brianna Tellschow tied the score for Upstate at 10-10 with her kill. The Spartans followed with four straight points to lead 14-10 as Dempsey and Callie Yeargin each picked up a kill. The Volunteers came back to take a 24-23 lead late but Ikenegbu evened the score the following play. A solo block by Dempsey and Haake service ace gave Upstate the two-point triumph.
  • Set Four:  Tennessee recorded six of the first seven points of the fourth set and 15 of 19. The Volunteers would later take a 22-9 lead on a kill. The Spartans outscored Tennessee 7-2 over the course of nine points and trailed 24-16 on an attack error. The Volunteers won the set, and match, the next play.
