Fort Myers, Fla. – DeNisha Swain scored a season-high 13 points while Anda Kuzmina finished in double figures with 11 points as the USC Upstate women's basketball team lost 93-60 at Florida Gulf Coast on Monday night in ASUN Conference action at Alico Arena.
FGCU improves to 17-3 overall and 3-0 in the ASUN while Upstate drops to 6-12 and 1-2.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
- Swain surpassed her previous season-high of 10 points against Brevard on Jan. 2.
- A'Lexxus Davis finished with nine points and grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
- China Dow scored a game-high 22 points with 10 rebounds to lead FGCU.
- Nasrin Ulel and Erica Nelson each scored 14 points, followed by Rosemarie Julien with 11 and Lisa Zderadicka with 10.
- Florida Gulf Coast held a 42-38 edge in rebounds.
- The Eagles were 38-for-73 (52 percent) from the field. Upstate finished 22-for-63 (35 percent) from the field.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- A Julien layup opened the scoring before Davis tied the game at 2 on a layup at the 8:02 mark.
- FGCU answered with a 6-0 run, prompting an Upstate timeout with 6:16 remaining.
- Jessica Cattani's layup with 3:20 to play gave the hosts an 18-4 lead.
- The Eagles led 28-12 at the end of the opening period.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Julien gave the Eagles a 22-point lead, their largest of the half, on a 3-pointer at the 9:27 mark that made the score 34-12.
- Upstate went on a 9-2 run as the Spartans pulled within 15, 36-21, at the second quarter media timeout with 4:31 left.
- Tamera Thorpe's layup at the 2:17 mark brought Upstate within 13, 36-23.
- FGCU closed the half on a 10-3 run to lead 46-26 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- A Ulel 3-pointer and layup gave the Eagles a 51-26 lead with just under nine minutes left.
- After a pair of Riley Popplewell free throws, Morgan Williams sank a 3-pointer to bring Upstate within 15, 56-41.
- Swain scored the final basket of the period just before time expired as Florida Gulf Coast led 66-47.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Ulel opened the scoring in the quarter with a 3-pointer before Kuzmina sank a pair of free throws with just under nine minutes to bring Upstate within 20, 69-49.
- Following a Davis layup that made the score 71-51 with 7:43 left, Florida Gulf Coast went on a 19-2 run capped by a Zderadicka layup with 2:48 to go that made the score 90-53.
- Latasha Johnson's jumper with 13 seconds left served as the final points of the game.
