Gibbons Records Career-High in Loss to Jacksonville
Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate freshman Michaela Gibbons scored a career-high 11 points but the Spartans were unable to hold back a 24-9 Jacksonville third quarter run in a 71-45 loss to the Dolphins on Monday night at the G.B. Hodge Center.
Jacksonville improves to 15-5 overall and 5-0 in the ASUN Conference while USC Upstate drops to 6-14 and 1-4.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
- Gibbons surpassed her previous career-high of seven points against William & Mary on Dec. 5, 2017.
- Riley Popplewell finished in double figures with 10 points. It marked the fifth time this season that she has finished with 10 or more points.
- Popplewell grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Spartans.
- Jasmyn Brown scored a game-high 19 points to lead Jacksonville.
- Brandi Buie recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
- La'Karis Salter finished with 10 points.
- Jacksonville held a 51-31 edge in rebounds.
- The Upstate bench outscored the Jacksonville reserves 25-18.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Brown got the Dolphins on the board with a jumper four seconds into the game before the Spartans went on a 4-0 run to lead 4-2 with 8:27 remaining.
- Following a scoring drought of 4:23 for both teams, Kayla Gordon evened the contest at 4 on a jumper from just outside the paint.
- A Buie layup followed by a free throw gave Jacksonville a 10-6 edge with just over 90 seconds remaining.
- DeNisha Swain sank a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to bring USC Upstate within one, 10-9. Neither team would score for the remainder of the period.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Following a Lindsay John 3-pointer that gave the Dolphins a 13-9 edge, USC Upstate tied the game at 13 with 7:34 remaining following jumpers by Gibbons and Diamon Shiflet.
- Jacksonville answered with 7-0 run capped by an Alexis Burns free throw to lead 20-13 at the 5:03 mark.
- Anda Kuzmina's layup brought USC Upstate within three, 23-20, with 3:23 left in the stanza.
- The Dolphins led 27-22 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- After a Brittney Delva layup at the 8:27 mark that brought USC Upstate within five, 29-24, Jacksonville went on 10-2 run to lead 39-26 with 5:27 to play in the frame.
- A Swain 3-pointer brought the Spartans within 13, 44-31, with 2:34 to play.
- Brown's 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining gave the visitors a 53-33 lead heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- A layup by Salter 16 seconds into the frame opened the scoring.
- Gibbons' 3-pointer with 8:26 to play brought her into double figures for the first time in her career.
- Rolanda Hayes' jumper with 1:18 remaining gave Jacksonville a 30-point lead, it's largest of the contest.
- Shiflet's layup with six seconds remaining served as the final points of the game.
