Spartanburg, S.C. – Brittany Case had four hits and four RBI to lead a USC Upstate offense that homered three times on Friday afternoon as the Spartans softball team opened play at the Upstate Classic with a doubleheader sweep of the Fairfield Stags at Cyrill Stadium.
USC Upstate improves to 4-0 on the season while Fairfield falls to 0-2 overall.
The Spartans earned the doubleheader sweep with scores of 10-1 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings.
GAME ONE – FAIRFIELD 1, USC UPSTATE 10 (5)
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – USC Upstate opened the game scoring three times to take an early 3-0 lead. Case was responsible for all three runs with her three-RBI double to center field that drove in Megan Obier, Kristen Wright and Kendsey Chappelear. Chappelear and Wright led off the frame with back-to-back singles and Obier drew a walk.
- Top 2nd – The Stags used an RBI groundout by Rachel Sieber to cut the Spartans lead down to 3-1.
- Bottom 4th – USC Upstate broke the game open courtesy of a seven-run inning to seal the victory, going ahead 10-1. Obier started the scoring with her three-run double to left center field and later scored on Case's RBI single. Kayla Hussey plated Case with her RBI groundout and Tarynn Tirpak, pinch-running for Logan Morris, crossed home plate when Elisa Cecchetti was caught in a rundown between first and second. Chappelear followed the next at-bat with an RBI single to right field allowing Cecchetti to score.
Notables
- Kelsey Sweatt (2-0) earned her second straight win throwing all five innings and gave up just one run on four hits, four walks and one strikeout.
- Destinee Pallotto (0-1) suffered the loss allowing seven runs on 10 hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
- Case set a new career-high with four RBI to lead the Spartans offensively while tying her career-best of three hits after going 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.
- Chappelear tied Case with three hits and had one RBI and one run scored in four plate appearances.
- Obier collected three RBI and scored twice along with Wright.
- Wright also contributed two hits at the plate.
- Cecchetti finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored.
- Fairfield had four different players record one hit each and Sieber posted one RBI.
- USC Upstate compiled 14 hits giving it three straight games with 10 or more in a game this season.
GAME TWO – FAIRFIELD 0, USC UPSTATE 8 (6)
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – The Spartans struck quickly for three runs to go ahead 3-0. Beasley drove in all three runs after hitting a three-run homer over the left field fence. The homer scored Chappelear and Wright, who singled and walked to begin the inning.
- Bottom 4th – Cecchetti extended USC Upstate's lead to 4-0 in the fourth after hitting her first home run of the year to left field.
- Bottom 6th – USC Upstate secured the 8-0 victory by scoring four times in the sixth highlighted by another three-run home run, this time from Hannah Davis. The homer by Davis started the scoring for the Spartans and plated Case and Obier. Chappelear ended the game two batters later with her RBI sacrifice fly to left field allowing Makenna Helton, pinch-running for Cecchetti, to come home from third.
Notables
- Christina Biggerstaff (1-0) picked up her first win at USC Upstate tossing a complete game shutout and struck out a season-high eight on three hits and two walks.
- Karisa Hughen (0-1) took the loss pitching five innings and surrendered five runs on six hits, two walks and no strikeouts.
- Beasley led the Spartans on offense with a 2-for-3 performance and three RBI. The first inning homer was her team-leading third of the season and 32nd of her career, putting her fifth all-time in that category.
- Davis tied Beasley for the team-lead with three RBI after recording both her first collegiate hit and home run in the same at-bat.
- Chappelear and Cecchetti added one RBI apiece, and were two of five players who tallied one hit along with Davis, Case and Obier.
- Cecchetti hit her first career home run at USC Upstate in the fourth inning.
- Makenna DiGuilio went 2-for-2 for the Stags.
