Spartanburg, S.C. – Christina Biggerstaff struck out a career-high 12 batters while Elisa Cecchetti drove in a career-best three RBI to lead the USC Upstate softball team to a 4-0 win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium to close out play at the Upstate Classic.
USC Upstate increases its winning streak to seven games to start the season and improves to 7-0 overall. With the loss, East Tennessee State falls to 3-4.
Scoring Breakdown
- Bottom 1st – Logan Morris gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead with her RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Kendsey Chappelear led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third the next at-bat when Ansley Gilstrap reached on an error. Chappelear scored on Morris' sacrifice fly.
- Bottom 4th – Cecchetti plated her first RBI of the game with no outs to extended USC Upstate's lead to 2-0. The Spartans had the first two runners reach as Brittany Case had a leadoff double to left field and Kristen Wright followed with a single down the left field line. Case would score on the single by Cecchetti.
- Bottom 6th – USC Upstate pushed its lead out to 4-0 courtesy of a two-RBI single by Cecchetti for her third run batted in on the afternoon. Case and Wright both scored on Cecchetti's single through the left side after Case singled and Wright reached on a throwing error.
Notables
- Biggerstaff (2-0) had a career-long outing to go with her career-high strikeout total. The junior had a complete game effort and did not allow a run on just two hits and two walks.
- Biggerstaff is the first Spartan pitcher to have 10 or more strikeouts in an appearance since Holly McKinnon recorded 10 against Lipscomb on March 25, 2017.
- Madison Ogle (2-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits, one walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
- Case led USC Upstate offensively after tying her career-high of three hits, two singles and a double, and scored twice.
- Cecchetti's three RBI were a team-high while Morris added one RBI.
- Lauren Lee and Kelly Warren had the only two hits for the Buccaneers.
