USC Upstate Takes Ninth Straight with Doubleheader Sweep at Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C. – Karla Beasley paced the USC Upstate offense with four hits, including one home run, as the Spartans captured their ninth straight victory to start the season on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of the Charlotte 49ers at Daughtridge Stadium.

USC Upstate improves to 9-0 on the season while Charlotte drops to 5-4 overall.

The Spartans earned the doubleheader sweep with scores of 4-1 in eight innings during game one and 3-2 in game two.

GAME ONE – USC UPSTATE 4, CHARLOTTE 1 (8)

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 8th – Neither team scored until the eighth inning when USC Upstate plated four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Kayla Hussey was placed on second to start the inning and came around to score when Ansley Gilstrap reached on a fielding error. Beasley and Brittany Case followed with back-to-back RBI sacrifice flies to make the score 3-0. Kristen Wright rounded out the scoring with her RBI infield single to third base.
  • Bottom 8th – The 49ers also started the inning with a runner on second base in Lizzy Birch. She scored Charlotte's only run of the game after an RBI sacrifice fly by Haley Pace to cut the Spartans lead to 4-1.

Notables

  • For the second straight game, Christina Biggerstaff (3-0) set a new career-high strikeout total with 13 on an eight-inning complete game. The junior allowed just one hit and gave up one unearned run.
  • Biggerstaff has currently not allowed an earned run in her last 21.0 innings of work.
  • Haley Wiseman (3-2) took the loss pitching eight innings and surrendered four runs (two earned) on seven hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
  • Wright and Kendsey Chappelear led the USC Upstate offense with 2-for-4 performances at the plate.
  • Wright was one of four players to have one RBI each along with Gilstrap, Beasley and Case.
  • Haley Pace had the only hit and RBI for Charlotte.

GAME TWO – USC UPSTATE 3, CHARLOTTE 2

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 2nd – Wright gave the Spartans an early 1-0 lead with one out on her RBI single to left field. Beasley led off the frame with a double down the left field line and scored on Wright's base hit.
  • Bottom 2nd – Erin Powers tied the game for the 49ers at 1-1 following her RBI single to center field.
  • Top 4th – USC Upstate used a solo home run by Beasley, her team-leading fifth of the season, to go back in front 2-1 with one out.
  • Bottom 5th – Charlotte tied the game again, this time at 2-2, on an RBI single down the left field line by Grace Beatty.
  • Top 7th – Kori Wancheck drove in the game-winning run, putting the Spartans ahead 3-2, with her pinch-hit RBI single to right center field. Wright started the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kaylyn DeVaney. The single from Wancheck allowed Wright to score from second base.

Notables

  • Caylie Van Auken (1-0) earned her first collegiate win in relief throwing two scoreless innings and registered one strikeout.
  • Alison Green (0-2) suffered the loss allowing one run on three hits, no walks and one strikeout in two relief innings.
  • USC Upstate starter Erin Hill threw five innings and gave up two runs on six hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
  • With her home run in the fourth inning, Beasley moves into a tie for third place all-time with current Spartan volunteer assistant coach Kendall Settlemyre at 34 career home runs.
  • Beasley tied her career-highs in hits and runs after going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
  • Wright went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Wancheck finished with one hit and RBI.
  • Beatty and Powers collected one hit and one RBI each for the 49ers.
