Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team dropped a midweek doubleheader to the North Carolina Tar Heels in non-conference play on Tuesday evening by scores of 7-2 and 3-0 from Cyrill Stadium.
USC Upstate falls to 19-9 on the season while North Carolina improves to 14-15 overall.
GAME ONE – NORTH CAROLINA 7, USC UPSTATE 2
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 4th – The Tar Heels plated four runs in their half of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Taylor Wike led off the inning with a home run to left field and Katie Bailiff followed three batters later with an RBI double to left field. Kiani Ramsey and Campbell Hutcherson each added RBI singles.
- Bottom 6th – Following a 45-minute rain delay, the Spartans came out in the sixth and scored once to cut their deficit to 4-1. Kristen Wright start the frame with a leadoff down the left field line and scored on a groundout by Logan Morris.
- Top 7th – North Carolina extended its lead to 7-1 after a three-run frame. Katelyn Shifflett had the first RBI with her leadoff home run to right center field, while Zoe Goodman contributed an RBI sacrifice fly and Bailiff an RBI sacrifice bunt.
- Bottom 7th – USC Upstate made the score 7-2 on an RBI single down the right field line by Elisa Cecchetti. Megan Obier got the inning started with her double to right center field and scored from second on Cecchetti's single.
Notables
- Brittany Pickett (11-5) earned the win throwing a complete game and gave up two runs on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
- Christina Biggerstaff (8-5) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
- Caylie Van Auken struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief and Kelsey Sweatt tossed one scoreless inning.
- Four different Spartan hitters had one hit apiece in Wright, Obier, Cecchetti and Ansley Gilstrap.
- Morris and Cecchetti had one RBI each while Wright and Obier scored both runs.
- The Tar Heels had five players record one hit each and Bailiff drove in a team-high two RBI.
GAME TWO – NORTH CAROLINA 3, USC UPSTATE 0
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 7th – North Carolina grabbed a 3-0 lead in the final inning after scoring three times. Hutcherson and Goodman picked up an RBI each on a single and a double, and pinch-hitter Berlynne Delamora drove in one with her groundout.
Notables
- Pickett (12-5) threw her second complete game of the doubleheader and surrendered no runs on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
- Erin Hill (6-2) suffered the loss surrendering three runs on eight hits, two walks and five strikeouts in a complete game effort.
- Gilstrap, Obier, Cecchetti, Karla Beasley and Brittany Case each collected one hit.
- Wike and Bailiff led the Tar Heels with two hits apiece.
- Hutcherson, Goodman and Delamora all had one RBI.
