USC Upstate Falls to Wisconsin 2-0 in Wildcat Invitational Opener

Tucson, Ariz. – The USC Upstate softball team dropped its opening game of the Wildcat Invitational on Friday afternoon to the Wisconsin Badgers, 2-0, at Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium.

USC Upstate falls to 18-1 on the season while Wisconsin improves to 12-8 overall.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 5th – The Badgers scored both of their runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Spartans. Kelly Welsh led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Welsh scored the next at-bat as Kelsey Jenkins singled to center field. Jenkins later came home on an RBI double to right center field by Brooke Wyderski.

Notables

  • Kaitlyn Menz (7-4) earned the win throwing a complete game and did not allow a run on one hit, three walks and 10 strikeouts.
  • Christina Biggerstaff (8-1) suffered the loss after also tossing a complete game and surrendered two runs on six hits, three walks and nine strikeouts.
  • Kristen Wright led USC Upstate offensively with one hit in three plate appearances.
  • Wright has now reached base in 14 straight games while Karla Beasley improved her number to 19 consecutive contests and Brittany Case 10.
  • Case drew two walks in the game while Beasley recorded one.
  • Jenkins finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Wyderski went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

  • The Spartans continue play at the Wildcat Invitational tonight at 7 p.m. EST against South Dakota.
