Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate softball team closed out its three-game series with North Florida on Sunday splitting a doubleheader with the Ospreys by scores of 2-0 and 3-2 from the UNF Softball Complex.
USC Upstate won the opener 2-0 and North Florida followed in game two with a 3-2 victory.
The Spartans record moves to 28-14 on the season and 7-5 in league play while the Ospreys are now 21-22 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
GAME ONE – USC UPSTATE 2, NORTH FLORIDA 0
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 6th – USC Upstate got on the board first in the sixth scoring twice to go ahead 2-0. The Spartans loaded the bases with one out on singles by Ansley Gilstrap and Megan Obier while Logan Morris was hit by a pitch. Brittany Case plated the first run of the inning with her RBI infield single and Kayla Hussey followed the next at-bat with an RBI groundout.
Notables
- Christina Biggerstaff (13-8) earned the win throwing her 17th complete game of the season and did not allow a run on two hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters for the second time this season.
- Sydney Matzko (10-14) suffered the loss surrendering two runs on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
- Gilstrap led USC Upstate offensively with two hits while scoring one run.
- Case and Hussey both went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
- Tarynn Tirpak scored the Spartans other run of the game.
- Navia Penrod and Dominica Cocuzza had one hit apiece for North Florida.
- USC Upstate outhit the Ospreys 6-2.
GAME TWO – USC UPSTATE 2, NORTH FLORIDA 3
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 2nd – The Spartans scored first for the second straight game plating one run to lead 1-0. Obier reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on Hussey's infield single. She then scored when Elisa Cecchetti reached on a UNF error.
- Bottom 3rd – North Florida came back with two runs in its half of the third on a two-RBI single by Cocuzza to go in front 2-1.
- Bottom 5th – The Ospreys extended their lead to 3-1 scoring once on Kayla McGory's RBI single.
- Top 6th – Karla Beasley cut USC Upstate's deficit down to 3-2 in the sixth after hitting her team-leading 13th home run of the season to left field.
Notables
- Matzko (11-14) picked up the win with a complete game and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
- Erin Hill (7-3) took the loss allowing two runs (none earned) on four hits, no walks and two strikeouts in three innings pitched.
- Beasley's solo home run in the sixth was the 42nd of her career and now puts her four away from tying Stacey Berrong (1996-99) for second in program history.
- Beasley also set a new season-high home run mark of 13, surpassing her old total of 12 set as a freshman in 2015.
- Hussey finished with a team-high two hits for the Spartans in three plate appearances.
- Beasley concluded the game 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
- Obier contributed USC Upstate's other run scored.
- Cocuzza collected two hits and two RBI for North Florida.

- The Spartans return home next weekend, April 14-15, hosting Jacksonville in their final home conference series of the season.
