JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 92
nd minute free kick ricocheted off the top of the crossbar and found the sliding foot of Jake Hawker, Spartans goalie
Luca Bulfon could only watch as the USC Upstate men's soccer team fell 1-0 on Friday night in Hodges Stadium.
In the first 45 minutes of the match the two teams played to a virtual stalemate. A shot by
Mario Arrocha in the 9
th minute and a shot by
Pol Monells in the 18
th minute was the only offense for the Spartans in the first half. Likewise, North Florida (1-0-0) only attempted a trio of shots in the opening half against a stingy USC Upstate (0-1-0) defense.
In the second half the Osprey's offense began to gain momentum and attempted 10 shots in the half. Bulfon registered a pair of saves in the half to keep the game scoreless and force overtime between the two schools. The Spartans played a very physical game against the Osprey, USC Upstate committed 20 fouls in the match and recorded a pair of yellow cards. North Florida committed seven fouls and had a pair of yellow cards in the match as well.
In the overtime period North Florida attempted a pair of shots and found the back of the net on a free kick opportunity in the 92
nd minute.
