SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The USC Upstate women's soccer team suffered a minor setback on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Florida International at County University Soccer Stadium.
USC Upstate (1-2-2) and Florida International (2-5-0) were even for the first few moments of the game. Spartans leading goal scorer Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) took the first shot of the game for either side at the 8:55 mark and saw the ball sail above the goal.
Moments later the Golden Panthers struck with a goal by Ellen Halseth in the 10th minute of the ballgame. Halseth then wasted little time in acquiring her second goal of the game with an unassisted shot in the 12th minute of the contest. For the rest of the half the Spartans defense held the Golden Panthers offense at bay and went into the locker room break trailing 2-0.
For a majority of the second half USC Upstate and FlU battled to a stalemate. With each team taking turns sprinting down the field to attack the others goal. Then in the 73rd minute Charity O'Neal put the dagger in the heart of Spartan fans as she scored the Golden Panthers third and final goal of the match.
