SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team fell to the High Point Panthers 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of nearly 300 people at County University Soccer Stadium.
USC Upstate (2-4-3, 0-2-1 BSC) has now lost two consecutive matches for the first time all season and the Spartans are now winless in their last three matchups dating back to the Wofford game. High Point (3-6-1, 2-0-1 BSC) has now won four straight matches over the Spartans dating back to the 2008 season.
In the opening half of play the Panthers recorded a pair of shots in the first three minutes of the contest. A third shot from the High Point offense came in the 10
th minute of the match from Emma Schossler. Spartans forward
Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, Md.) finally got an opportunity in the 11
th minute of the game but her shot sailed high.
Over the next 12 minutes the game was dominated by the High Point attack as they stayed on the Spartans side of midfield for the majority of the time.
Logan Pace (Belmont, N.C.) came away with her first save of the contest in the 18
th minute but moments High Point scored their first goal of the game in the 24
th minute.
Going into the halftime break the Spartans trailed 1-0 but were outshot 12-1 in the opening half. Pace recorded a trio of saves in the opening half to keep the game from getting out of hand early.
Freshman goalkeeper
Haylee Myrup (York, S.C.) started the second half in goal for the Spartans. The High Point offense once again picked up where they left off in the opening half and scored their second goal of the contest in the 55
th minute of the game.
Trailing 2-0 the Spartans tried to generate some offensive with a shot by
Delaney Bussey (Brighton, Mich.) in the 65
th minute. The shot sailed left however and the Spartans were back to fighting for possession against the Panthers defense.
In the 69
th minute of the game the High Point offense once again found the back of the net, taking a 3-0 lead over USC Upstate. Try as they might the Spartans were only able to attempt one more shot by
Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) in the 73
rd minute of the contest.
Stats of the Match:
- Bussey, Hill and Honis were the only Spartans able to attempt shots in the match.
- Emma Schossler, Sam Gerhart and Ashlyn Kearney all had three shots in the game for High Point.
- Logan Pace led all goalies with 3 saves in the match.
