SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team routed Mars Hill 6-1 on Thursday night in front of an energetic crowd at County University Soccer Stadium.
"I think for us we were a little slow to get going," USC Upstate head coach
Tyson John said. "We were supposed to play at South Carolina State earlier in the week…so for us it was getting in and shaking off some of the cobwebs."
USC Upstate (1-1-1) got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half before
Montanna Hill (Mount Airy, MD) scored the games opening goal in the eighth minute. Moments later
Abbie Ellis (Clemmons, N.C.) gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead with her 22
nd career goal. The goal places Ellis in a tie atop the school's All-Time career goals list.
"I feel awesome and could not have done this without my teammates," Hill responded. "It is a blessing being here at USC Upstate."
"It feels great [on tying the school's All-time goals record] but I could not have done this without my teammates," Ellis said.
In the second half the Spartan offense went on cruise control scoring on four different occasions. Hill scored her second goal of the match in the 53
rd minute and was followed by
Emma Honis (Ocoee, Fla.) in the 67
th minute.
Jane Bossler (Reading, Pa.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 80
th minute and
Jayna Tyler (Brooksville, Fla.) ended the Spartans scoring with a goal in the 82
nd minute.
The Lions scored their only goal came in the 71
st minute off the foot of Fanny Gustavsson. Outside of the goal, Spartans staring goalkeeper
Logan Pace (Belmont, N.C.) did not see much action recording a trio of saves on four shot attempts.
STATS OF THE MATCH:
- This was the first Division I era meeting between USC Upstate and Mars Hill (0-1-0).
- USC Upstate is now 6-0-2 all-time against the Lions dating back to the turn of the century.
- The Spartans outshot Mars Hill 22-6 in the game and recorded eight shots on goal.
- Mars Hill recorded six corner kicks in the contest and six fouls in the game to lead USC Upstate.
