Men’s Basketball Preview: Spartans Host Hampton in Big South Home Opener

Series History
This is the sixth all-time meeting between USC Upstate and Hampton University. The Spartans hold a 3-2 lead overall in the series and they are currently looking to break a two game winning streak by the Pirates. Hampton won both meetings last season, including a 92-71 win in the G.B. Hodge Center on Senior Day last season. Deion Holmes led the Spartans in scoring in the series finale with 23-points on the afternoon.

Last time out
UPSTATE – USC Upstate is coming off a 73-56 victory over Longwood on Saturday afternoon. The victory is the first conference win for the Spartans this season and just their second road win on the year. This is also the Spartans fourth win in the past five games. Nevin Zink led all scorers with a career high 21-points on Saturday afternoon. Joining Zink in double figures were Tommy Bruner (14 pts), Thomas Booker (12 pts) and Bryson Mozone (10 pts). Everette Hammond hauled in a career high 10 rebounds in the victory over Longwood.  
 
Hampton – Hampton is 6-8 overall on the season and 1-0 in Big South competition. The Pirates have won their past two games against Saint Peter's University and Charleston Southern. Hampton defeated the Buccaneers 92-85 on Saturday afternoon for their first conference win of the season. The Pirates have yet to win on the road this season and they are currently 0-6 in away games.

Ones to watch
UPSTATEEverette Hammond leads the team in points per game with 14 and is second amongst starters in rebounds with 4.2 boards per contest. Tommy Bruner has scored at least 14 points in six out of the last seven games played. Bryson Mozone has proved to be the spark off the bench for the Spartans averaging 10 points per contest.

Hampton – Jermaine Marrow leads the team in assists (54) and points per game (23.5), while Ben Stanley leads the team in rebounds (105), blocked shots (17) and is second on the team in scoring with 21.3 points per game.

The Spartans next home game will be against Radford on Thursday, January 16, 2020. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
