Series History
For the first time in 16 years, USC Upstate and Southern Wesleyan will face off in a basketball game inside the G.B. Hodge Center. This is the 41
st meeting between the two squads in a rivalry that dates back to the 1974-75 season. The Warriors won 10 of the first 11 contests played between the two teams, but since 1979, Upstate has won all but four of the matchups. The Spartans hold a 26-14 overall series lead and a 14-6 record against Southern Wesleyan inside the Hodge Center. This is the first meeting between the two schools since the 2004 season, when Upstate won 103-69. It is also the first meeting between the schools since Upstate moved to the Division I ranks.

Ones to Watch
Upstate – Junior guard
Everette Hammond (Silver Springs, Md.) and sophomore guard
Tommy Bruner (Columbia, S.C.) will once again play key roles for the Spartans this season. Both Bruner and Hammond have been named to the Preseason All-Big South Second Team. Hammond led the team in scoring (478 points), defensive rebounds (123), steals (39), and he led the Big South in free throw percentage (.831). The Maryland native is closing in on 1,000 point mark of his career. Bruner, meanwhile, is coming off a Freshman All-American season for the Spartans. The Palmetto State native set the Division I era school freshman record for points in a season with 461. Bruner, also, took home National Player of the Week accolades for the week of February 2, 2020.
Â
Southern Wesleyan – A 20-win team a season ago and the defending Conference Carolina Tournament Champions, the Warriors return two of their top-five scorers from a season ago. Sophomore guard Ta'Jay Dunlap led the team in scoring with 17.4 points per contest and he started a team high 30 games last season as a true freshman. Solomon Smith finished fourth on the team with 12.8 points per contest and he led Southern Wesleyan with 6.9 rebounds per contest.
