Baseball Falls to WKU in Extra Innings

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jason Matthews went 3-for-6 with three RBI and Devin Buckner extended his hit streak to seven games, but USC Upstate baseball dropped game two to Western Kentucky in 10 innings Saturday evening at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

Austin Morgan got the nod on the mound for his first start as a Spartan pitcher and struck out seven WKU batters in 4.2 innings of work while giving up just three runs and allowing two walks. Kevin Davis threw 3.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts and only one earned run before Will Wheeler closed it down.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
B1: Matthews got things going with a leadoff single up the middle before Buckner and Cameron MacIntosh drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Julian Rip knocked in Matthews with a sac fly to center to get the Spartans on the board.

B4: WKU tied things up with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, but Upstate answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Ben Olson zipped a single past the third baseman, and Gallagher then placed a shot just fair down the right field line for a double that pushed Olson to third. Hennessy drove in Olson with a groundout to shortstop before Matthews plated Gallagher on a double to left center for a 3-1 lead.

The top of the fifth was rough for the Spartans as the half inning saw three different Upstate pitchers and four consecutive walks, allowing WKU to even things up at 3-3. The Hilltoppers took a 4-3 lead on an RBI double in the top of the seventh before pushing their lead to 6-3 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth.

B8: Olson was hit by a pitch before Gallagher and Hennessy drew back-to-back walks once again to load the bases for the Spartans. Matthews came through with a two-run single to right center, and then Jeff Taylor sent a shot to the first baseman who tried to set up a double play, but it was not successful and Hennessy was able to score on the fielder's choice to tie the game up at 6-6.

After a scoreless ninth inning, to the top of the 10th it went, and Upstate committed a pair of detrimental errors to allow the Hilltoppers an 8-6 lead. The Spartans didn't have an answer in the bottom if the inning as they suffered their second loss of the season.
