SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate baseball fell 5-2 to the Catamounts of Western Carolina Friday evening at Cleveland S. Harley Park. The Spartans got off to a shaky start by giving up three runs and committing a pair of errors in the top of the first inning, and the squad ultimately could not recover.
Jordan Marks once again got the start on the mound and tossed 5.1 innings giving up three earned runs. He struck out three batters in the top of the first inning to get out of trouble as WCU left the bases loaded. Marks did not allow a walk and added another strikeout to his line in the top of the sixth before Will Lancaster took over and threw 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, one walk, and two hits.
The Spartans had six hits and stranded 11 runners in the game, including leaving the bases loaded on two straight strikeouts in the bottom of the third. Upstate was led at the plate by Julian Rip who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. He also had four putouts in right field. Mason Stewart picked up an RBI and Jack Hennessy, Jason Matthews, and Jeff Taylor rounded out the Spartans with a hit in the game.
UPSTATE SCORING BREAKDOWN
B4:Â Rip beat out the throw to first for a leadoff single to short before stealing second and advancing to third as Jack Gallagher reached on an error by the Catamount first baseman. Mason Stewart drove in Rip with a shot to second base to get the Spartans on the board.
B6:Â Rip recorded his second hit of the day with a single to left in the bottom of the sixth. After that, Gallagher drew a walk on four straight balls to get runners on first and second, and then Mason Stewart singled to shortstop before all runners took an extra base on another error from WCU's first baseman, including Rip who crossed the plate for the second time in the game.
