Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Coleman’s Career Night Not Enough Against Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Junior Molly Coleman put up a career-high 19 points and her first double-double of the season Monday night, but USC Upstate women's basketball dropped the first game of a two-game series against Longwood on the road, 79-70. Upstate outrebounded its opponent for the third straight game (43-31) and every Spartan made it on the scoresheet as the squad dropped to 3-7 (1-4 BSC) this season.

Upstate got out to an early lead and built up to a seven-point advantage with 3:50 remaining in the opening frame, and Coleman hit her fifth bucket of the game in the closing minute to send Upstate into the second period up 19-13.

Longwood attempted to chip away at the lead in the second quarter, coming within two points of the Spartans a minute and a half in. However, a layup from Lillian Flantos followed by a triple by Dakota McCaughan quickly pushed Upstate's lead back out to seven. Longwood got a jumper back in the final seconds of the half to head into the halftime intermission down 36-30.

The Spartans held a game-high 10-point lead with 6:53 to go in the third period, but Longwood lit it up in the third, shooting 66 percent from the floor for a 28-point effort in the frame. Longwood took their second lead of the night with a minute left in the third quarter in the midst of a 9-0 run, and though Upstate would come within two points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, the Spartans could never retake the lead from the Lancers.
