Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nineteen Points from Bryson Mozone, 11 from Jordan Gainey, and 10 from Mysta Goodloe as Men's Basketball Extends Streak of Three-Plus Double Figure Scorers at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second consecutive game, USC Upstate men's basketball's senior forward Bryson Mozone headline a trio of double-figure scorers—the sixth consecutive game with three double-digit scorers—against Charlotte Friday night.

Mozone scored 19 points over 39 minutes against the 49ers, nearly missing his fifth career 20-plus point effort. He finished 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-7 from behind the arc as he's drained seven three-pointers through two games this season.

Joining Mozone in double-figures were sophomore guard Jordan Gainey and junior guard Mysta Goodloe who added 11 and 10 points, respectively. For Gainey, his 11 points tie a career-high while also giving him back-to-back double-figure games to open his collegiate career while Goodloe's 10 points were also a career-high and secured his first career double-digit scoring game.

How It Happened
First Half
  • Finding the paint four times and draining a three-pointer, Charlotte used an 11-0 run following the opening tip to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Taking the ball down the floor off a Clyde Trapp Jr. turnover, Upstate's Mysta Goodloe ended the 49ers' run as he drained his first three-pointer of the season.
  • Halting another Charlotte run and cutting the 49ers lead to single-digits, Bryson Mozone scored the first of his team-high 21 points as he came off a screen to find himself wide open from the top of the arc for a three-ball.
  • After seeing the 49ers grow their lead to double-digits following a pair of free throws, Goodloe cut his way to the hoop for a layup to pull the Spartans back within double-figures as he had a hand in each of Upstate's first seven points, scoring five and racking up an assist on Mozone's three.
  • Looking to trim a Charlotte lead that had grown to as many as 18 points in the first half, Dalvin White took over for the Spartans in the final three-plus minutes of the half. He scored seven of the team's final nine points of the half, kicking things off with a blow-by layup and concluding by forcing a turnover and beating the buzzer with a three from the top of the key.
Second Half
  • Coming out of the half, Josh Aldrich provided a spark for the Spartans, scoring the team's first five points of the half, hitting a jumper while being fouled, making the ensuing free throw, and crashing the offensive glass for a putback finish.
  • Trailing by 17, Jordan Gainey kicked off a 13-2 Upstate scoring run that brought the Charlotte lead back to single digits as he took the extra pass and turned it into a corner three before adding a layup and a trey from the right-wing to tally eight points in the run. The Spartans found their other five points in the run from a Khydarius Smith slam and a Mozone three.
  • As Charlotte looked to grow its lead back to double-digits, the trio of Smith, Goodloe, and Mozone kept the Spartans within striking distance. Goodloe and Mozone bookended things with a layup apiece while Smith made a pair of free throws and slipped the 49er defense as White found him for the easy flush.

Notable
  • With Bryson Mozone, Jordan Gainey, and Mysta Goodloe scoring in double-figures Friday night, Upstate continued its streak of games with three double-digit scorers, extending the streak to six games, including both games this season.
  • Scoring a team-high 19 points, Mozone has led the Spartans in each of the team's two games this season as he's averaging 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this season.
  • Scoring 11 points in back-to-back games, Gainey has scored in double-figures in each of the first two games of his collegiate career. Against Charlotte, he finished 4-of-8 from the field while tying for the team lead with three three-point field goal makes.
  • Totaling 10 points Friday night, Mysta Goodloe secured his first career double-figure scoring game as he went 3-of-5 from the field, 1-of-2 from three, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line against Charlotte.
