Mario Arrocha and Justin Hynes Score for Men's Soccer in Regular Season Finale at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – Competing for the final time in the regular season Wednesday night, USC Upstate men's soccer fought till the end, scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes in a battle against Presbyterian.

Despite facing a two-goal deficit heading into the final 10 minutes of the match, the Spartans didn't let the disadvantage deter them as redshirt junior forward Mario Arrocha and senior defender Justin Hynes delivered late goals in Upstate's comeback attempt.

Scoring in the 82nd minute, Arrocha netted his seventh goal of the season off an assist from redshirt junior defender Felipe Marty—Marty's first assist and point as a Spartan—while Hynes goal in the 86th minute marked the first of his career, coming off redshirt senior defender Filippo Censini's second assist of the season.

How It Happened
  • 10' – Working the give and go with Elias Ehlin, Javier Torres delivered a shot from a tough angle from just outside the six-yard box as Presbyterian keeper Valentin Kliebe got just enough mitt on the shot to keep the match tied.
  • 15' – Finding the ball at his feet after a clearance chance from USC Upstate off an Alex Guzman cross, the Blue Hose's Jose Lado worked a shot through the Spartan backline to the far post to put Presbyterian on top.
  • 55' – Taking a cross intended to flip sides of the field and put an attacker behind the Spartan defense following a long ball down the sideline, PC's Nacho Gallego added some cushion to the Blue Hose advantage as Nacho Gallego pulled Upstate's Luca Bulfon off his line before tapping a shot past him for the 2-0 lead.
  • 72' – Making a run toward the back post, Upstate's Hayden Anderson fired a shot from atop the six-yard box as Kliebe came off his line to make the deflection and hold Presbyterian's two-goal advantage.
  • 82' – Off a beautiful pass from Felipe Marty that travelled from beyond midfield into the 18-yard box, Mario Arrocha won the ball, cutting back on a PC defender before pulling a left-footed shot past the Blue Hose keeper into the upper corner on the near post to pull the Spartans within one.
  • 85' – Winning a loose ball inside the box, Torres delivered a shot that was blocked before Arrocha attempted to bend the rebound inside the left post with the ball not quite bending back far enough and falling wide. Off the ensuing goal kick, Presbyterian brought the ball to its possession before flipping a pass forward for Alex Guzman who stayed onside long enough to work a chip shot from the top of the box past the keeper and into the net.
  • 86' – Working for a quick answer, Filippo Censini threw a cross into the box where Javier Torres and Justin Hynes were making runs. Hynes against pressure from a PC defender won the ball in the air toward the back post, punching a header to the near post for his first career goal.

Notable
  • Scoring in the 86th minute, Justin Hynes became the sixth Spartan this season to net his first career goal, joining Hayden Anderson, Elias Ehlin, Alvaro Martin, Brody Williams, and Alex Ljusberg.
  • Wednesday's match marked the second consecutive match with a Spartan scoring their first career goal as Hynes' tally against Presbyterian came after Ljusberg netted the first goal of his career last Saturday versus UNC Asheville.
