ROCK HILL, S.C. – Four different Spartans notched a goal Sunday evening, including Pol Monells who had a goal and an assist, as USC Upstate men's soccer defeated Winthrop 4-1 on the road to remain unbeaten in Big South Conference play.
The Spartans improved to 2-2-1 (2-0-1 BSC) on the year, and this is the best start to conference play in Upstate's Big South era. The Spartans have already surpassed last season's total number of conference wins.
Monells opened the scoring in the match at the 26:33 mark with his fourth goal of the year to give Upstate a 1-0 lead. He leads the team in scoring so far this season and his four goals surpassed his total from last season.
Mario Arrocha doubled Upstate's lead in the 35th minute with his first goal of year. He led the Spartan attack on the night with seven shots, two on goal, and leads the team in shots for the whole season with 22.
After the Eagles cut their deficit in half early in the second half, freshman Jeremy Montero answered back with his second goal of the year off an assist from Monells at the 75:10 mark.
Pascal Corvino added another when he found the back of the net 10 minutes later to put the Spartans up 4-1.
The Spartans held the advantage in shots (16-4) and corner kicks (8-4) in the match.
Winthrop collected seven fouls on the night compared to Upstate's six, but all four yellow cards in the match were handed to Upstate.
