SPARTANBURG, SC—USC Upstate women's soccer lost 3-1 to Presbyterian College on Wednesday night when hosting the Blue Hose at the County University Soccer Stadium.
The first shot of the contest was from Kori Lawrence of the Blue Hose at 01:34 in the first half that resulted in a block by the Spartans. The Blue Hose continued to take shots as Syndi Dachs went for her first shot at 3:59 that was blocked as well. The Blue Hose kept possession of the ball for the time being in the first half. Morgan Hutchinson attempted a shot that was off target at 12:23 in the first half. Presbyterian scored the first goal of the contest at 15:28 in the first half from Kori Lawrence assisted by Emily Laboon. Amy Cloud tried for another shot for the Blue Hose that was blocked at 26:04.
The Spartans struggled offensively for the first 15 minutes of the contest. The first shot by the Spartans was not until 30:21 from a penalty kick by
Jane Bossler (Reading, Penn.) but it was to no avail.
Ashley Finn's (Wake Forest, NC) shot was saved by the goalkeeper at 31:09 in the first half.
Ellie Arnold (London, England) attempted to get some points on the board for the Spartans with an on target shot at 33:36 that we saved by the PC goalkeeper. Payton Gulley scored the second goal at 34:32 giving the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead.
Raegan Meyer (Wake Forest, NC) tried for her first shot at 35:26 in the first half but it was picked up by the goalie. The Spartans struggled to be on the attack and did not score until 41:04 when
Ellie Arnold was assisted by Bossler. The Blue Hose ended the first half up 2-1.
Bossler made the first attempt of the second half for the Spartans at 47:09 but could not score. Lawrence had a free kick at 55:13 that resulted in an amazing save by
Haylee Grudzien (York, SC). Kendra Davis attempted a shot for the Blue Hose at 58:15 but it was saved by Grudzien.
Jayna Tyler (Brooksville, Fla.) tried for her shot at 58:17 but could not get it in the back of the net.
Finn attempted a shot on target for the Spartans at 62:40 that was saved by the goalkeeper. Dachs took an off target shot for Presbyterian at 66:43 in the second half. Cloud's shot was blocked by the Spartans at 67:14. The Blue Hose scored their third goal at 70:21 in the second half by Morgan Hutchinson assisted by Kristen Bane. Cloud attempted another shot at 74:28 that was saved. Caroline Dipzinski's shot at 78:31 was on target but picked up by Grudzien. Dipzinksi took another shot at 79:57 but did not score. Gulley took the final shot for the Blue Hose at 88:22 that was saved by Grudzien.
Match Stats:
The Spartans got their first yellow card of the season for unsportsmanlike conduct for Finn at 33:36 in the first half.
Hutchinson received a yellow card at 58:17 in the second half for Presbyterian.
The Spartans were outshot 17-9 in overall shots and 7-6 on goal.
The Blue Hose attempted 7 corner kicks while the Spartans had a single opportunity during the contest.
