Spartans Drop Series to Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – USC Upstate baseball dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Charleston Southern, 5-4 and 6-0, to fall to 23-9 (14-9) on the season.

Alex Garbrick returned to the starting rotation this weekend and went 4.0 innings in the first game of the day. He pitched his way out of a jam in third after getting runners on second and third with no outs and retiring the next three batters faced. Garbrick struck out five batters and allowed just three hits, one run, and three walks in his outing.

Jack Gallagher got the Spartans on the board with a leadoff homer in the second. It was his third homerun of the year and 30th RBI, which leads the team and ranks in the top-3 in the conference.

Julian Rip batted 3-for-4 in game one with two doubles and a home run. His leadoff double in the third set Jason Matthews up for a sac fly that put the Spartans up 2-0, and his leadoff homer in the top of the fifth extended the lead to 3-0.

Jack Hennessy added an RBI single in the seventh to make it 4-1, but the Bucs would go on to score four unanswered runs including a two-run go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth.

The Spartans were held to just four hits in game two, and a pair of those hits came from Rabon as he extended his on-base streak to 23 games with a leadoff double in the second and a single in the seventh.

Nate Payne got the start on the mound for the Spartans and struck out six batters in 4.0 innings pitched. He gave up just one earned run and two walks in his day of work. Jake Cubbler had a solid relief performance as he threw 2.0 innings with three strikeouts and no hits, runs, or walks allowed.

USC Upstate will travel to Presbyterian College for a midweek conference clash on Tuesday, April 20, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
