Spartans Blast Their Way to a Doubleheader Sweep over Western Carolina

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team swept Western Carolina on Tuesday afternoon to pick up their 400th all-time win inside Cyrill Softball Stadium.

USC Upstate (22-13, 9-3 Big South) is now 15-2 at home this season and picked up their first midweek sweep of the season since March 17th against South Carolina State. The Spartans are now a perfect 15-0 against Western Carolina in games played inside the friendly confines of Cyrill Stadium.

In the first game of the afternoon, the two teams got into a bit of a pitchers dual, with zeros on the scoreboard through the first two innings of action. In the bottom of the third inning, Tiffany Domingue (York, S.C.) came through with an RBI groundout to break the scoreless tie. In the top of the sixth inning, Western Carolina tied up the game with an RBI single up the middle. The tie was short lived however, as Peyton Darnell (Fort Mill, S.C.) blasted a two-run bomb over the scoreboard in left field to give the Spartans the victory.

Savannah Brown (Mint Hill, N.C.) pitched 5.0 innings of shutout softball and surrendered just five hits on the day. The freshman pitcher also struck out a trio of Catamounts in the process. Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Adison Yoder (Newton, N.C.) picked up her fourth win of the season in relief. Yoder pitched 2.0 innings and allowed just one run off two hits.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Spartans got off to an electrifying start as they plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning, Madison Lanoux (Fleming Island, Fla.) singled through the right side of the infield to drive in the fifth run of the ball game for USC Upstate. A wild pitch allowed Darnell to score from third and the Spartans held a 6-0 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lanoux recorded her second RBI of the game and the Spartans led 7-0.

Mallie Brown (Stockbridge, Ga.) picked up her ninth win of the season after a complete game shutout against Western Carolina. The junior pitcher struckout five Catamount batters and she allowed just four hits on the night.
