Spartans Suffer Sweep in Final Home Series against Campbell

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate baseball dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Campbell to close out the regular season home slate. The Spartans were held to just three hits on the day and did not score a single run, dropping the first game 12-0 in seven innings before losing the second game 8-0.

The Spartans fell to third place in the Big South standings with a conference record of 25-12, while Campbell took over sole possession of first place with a conference record of 25-9.

"It was a disappointing weekend, and I'm disappointed in how we played today. We've had a great regular season up to this point, and we put ourselves in a position where we're playing for a conference championship and competing for a potential at-large bid for a regional. To play as well as we have this deep into the season, it's disappointing to have a weekend like we did. We've got to learn from it and move on, because we are going to face Campbell again in the conference tournament. Certainly they outplayed us in every phase this weekend, and we've got to be better next time around," said head coach Mike McGuire.

Upstate struggled to get the third out throughout the day as five runs in game one came with two outs, and all but one run in game two came with two outs.

The Spartans walked 11 batters in game one, which was the first time the pitching staff has walked more than seven this season and the most since walking 12 against Western Kentucky on March 1, 2020. Upstate was held to one hit in the second game for the first time since April 21, 2012 against Jacksonville.

It was also the first time Upstate has lost three consecutive games at home since April 12-18, 2019.

UP Next for the Spartans
Upstate just announced this past Wednesday the addition of a midweek contest at the University of Louisville for Tuesday, May 18. The Spartans will face the Cardinals for the first time since 1989 for their final midweek game of the season. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium.
