CONWAY, S.C. – Looking to extend its winning streak off its emotional victory last Saturday at Furman, USC Upstate men's soccer travelled to Coastal Carolina for a meeting with a strong Conference USA team who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.
In a matchup of two teams seeking their second victory of the season, it was the Chanticleers that came away victorious Tuesday evening, downing the Spartans 4-0.
In a scrappy match that saw 34 combined fouls and seven bookings, Upstate continued to fight throughout the match despite trailing. Taking advantage of fouls deep in their offensive end to set up scoring opportunities in the second half as it attempted to erase the deficit, resulting in five second-half shot attempts.

How It Happened
- 1' – Seeking to put away a centering pass, Danny Cabera was fouled from behind in the box, earning a Coastal Carolina penalty kick. Stepping to the penalty spot, Emile Rzepecki buried the shot past a diving Luca Bulfon for the goal.
- 4' – Taking a pass off a free kick from Felipe Marty, Jimmy James rocketed a one-time shot high from outside the box.
- 14' – Working around a defender and back to the center of the pitch, James delivered another shot from just outside the box, this time a left-footed rocket that sailed high.
- 16' – Looking to play the ball into the box, Nicholas Itopoulos delivered a firm cross towards the back post that stayed high and found the upper 90 to extend the Chanticleer advantage.
- 38' – Taking a centering pass from Hayden Anderson, Xavi Wences fired a one-timer from outside the box as the shot pushed just wide of the net.
- 55' – Getting a cross towards the back post from Mario Arrocha, Javier Torres climbed the back of a Coastal Carolina defender to head an attempt that sailed high as he was being undercut by the Chanticleer defender.
- 65' – Winning the ball back in the midfield, Michael Fowler delivered a chip pass to Alvaro Garcia-Pasqual who worked around a Spartan defender to the top of the box, firing a right-footed shot to the left post for the goal.
- 67' – Off a Mads Poulsson corner kick, Peter Dearle leapt above the scrum to head a shot towards the near post where Marcello Jones got a piece of the shot on his run to deflect the shot into the net.
Notable
- Making his fifth start of the season, Luca Bulfon tallied five saves on the night, having collected four or more saves in four of his five starts this season. The lone match he didn't record four or more saves—College of Charleston—his defense surrendered just two shot attempts with just one coming on goal.
- Despite taking eight shots in the match, Upstate did not see a shot attempt land on goal for the first time since August 30, 2019, when North Florida held the Spartans to just two shot attempts, none on goal.
