Luca Bulfon's First Career Shutout Heads Strong Defensive Effort as Men's Soccer Earns Draw at College of Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Enduring a one-hour plus lightning delay and battling Mother Nature throughout the night, USC Upstate men's soccer maintained a clean sheet Wednesday night, playing to a 0-0 draw with host College of Charleston.

On the night, the Spartans backline put forth a solid effort to keep junior goalkeeper Luca Bulfon clean all night as the Rivignano-Teor, Italy native collected his first career shutout as the Cougars managed just five shots, landing just one on goal.

Offensively, Upstate took a season-high 22 shots, getting five shots on goal as the Spartans found a shot on target in both halves and the second overtime period. Sophomore forward Jeremy Montero led the Spartans in shots on goal, landing both of his shots on target while sophomore midfielder Elias Ehlin led Upstate with four total shots.

How It Happened
  • 4' – Upstate struck first with the opening scoring opportunity as Ehlin fired a shot toward the left post that was saved by Cougar goalie Cameron Smith.
  • 10' – College of Charleston countered with a scoring chance of its own in the 10th minute, but Bulfon thwarted the Jake Nicholson shot, saving the Cougars' lone shot on goal.
  • 14' – Junior Hayden Anderson tallied Upstate's second first-half shot on goal attempt in the 14th minute, resulting in another save from Smith.
  • 25' – Earning the match's first booking, College of Charleston's Lucas Cedermark earned a straight red card to give the Spartans a one-man advantage over the final 84:35 of the match.
  • 37' – The first half's second booking came courtesy of the Cougars' Alden Ray as he received a yellow card in the 37th minute.
  • 68' – The cards continued to mount for College of Charleston with Jude Swails booking in the 68th minute, the Cougars' third card of the match.
  • 70' – Upstate picked up its first card in the match in the 70th minute as Montero received a booking.
  • 75' – Montero put Upstate's first second-half shot on goal in the 75th minute, forcing Smith to make his third save of the match.
  • 84' – Redshirt junior Mario Arrocha place a shot on target with the shot heading towards the right post before Smith stepped forth the deter the effort.
  • 94'/96' – College of Charleston earned a pair of corner kicks in the first overtime as the Cougars outshot the Spartans in the period three to one. Of the two corner kicks for the Cougars both resulted in shots from Nicholson that landed off target.
  • 101' – Anderson earned Upstate's second booking of the evening to open the second overtime period.
  • 108' – Taking the penultimate shot of the match and his second shot of the night, Montero delivered the Spartans' final shot on frame as Smith corralled his fifth save of the night to preserve the 0-0 draw.
 
Notable
  • In his 12th career start, junior goalie Luca Bulfon earned his first career shutout as he posted a career-high 110:00 minutes in goal Wednesday night. Earning his first career shutout, he faced just five total shots with one falling on frame, resulting in his lone save in the 10th minute of the match.
  • Upstate's clean sheet against College of Charleston is the team's first shutout since blanking Longwood 1-0 on March 14, 2021.
  • Allowing just five total shots and one shot on goal both totals mark the fewest allowed by the Spartans since permitting just two shots, both on goal, against Gardner-Webb on April 3, 2021. Upstate's one shot on goal allowed Wednesday is the first time the program has allowed just a single shot on target since allowing one against Presbyterian on March 10, 2021.
